360 HD-DVD player or DVD upconverter
« on: August 19, 2007, 01:13:47 AM »
So my 360 broke down, and Im going to do everything in my power to keep it alive next time. So im not going to play dvd\'s in it anymore. And somehow, in a house that has a tv in 4 rooms, we have no dvd players. Theres one really crappy one in the living room, but other than that I always used the ps2 or my computer.

Anyway, I dont want to spend that much money because im a cheap bitch. HD-dvd is probably going to lose, so I dont want a standalone hd-dvd player. Dont want to pay for a ps3, and Im definitly not paying for a standalone blu-ray player.

The options are a 164.99 360 hd-dvd player (fry\'s is the one with the cheaper price), or a $150 oppo upconverter http://www.amazon.com/OPPO-DV-970HD-Up-Converting-Universal-Player/dp/B000GT5FK0/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/002-6293840-7185615?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1187514717&sr=8-2 for 15 bucks less.

I was leaning towards the hd-dvd player, since I still have the option of the matrix and 300 in HD. But then i heard a number of people saying that the player doesnt play the duel discs (hd and standard on one disc). If thats true, then ill probably just go with the upconverter, since a lot of hd-dvd\'s seem to be on those. I dont have a big library of dvd\'s, so im not too woried about building a new library of hd-dvd\'s er whatever

Maybe a cheap $50 dvd player will do for now and wait until the price of hd video player get cheaper and the war settle out before upgrade to High Def.

I was hoping to take advantage of my hdtv in some way. I like the cheapness though, lol. Do you think a dvd upconverter isnt worth it? Iv never seen one in action. I tried to find one at a few best buys but they never had one going

edit: going to get this http://shop2.outpost.com/product/5282377?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG tomorrow. Good reviews on amazon

the thing with the 360 hd-dvd add-on is whenever your 360 fails you\'re SOL when it comes to your movie collection.

You made the right choice w/the upconverting player.  I\'m sure the Oppo will have better PQ but for 60 smackers you can\'t really complain.

I have the ADD-ON and the one thing no one has mentioned is one of the more crucial things.

The sound SUCKS. Honestly, I love the damn thing but every movie sounds like it\'s on mute.
My Hi-Def movie collection (much smaller than the SD one).

If its true with every add on I wonder how does the thing sell. Are you sure thats not a problem with your settings or something? First time I heard it

If you have the right software/hardware or something. Even though my computer is relatively up to date (except for the processor), i still dont think I have the right stuff to run it

And, what\'s PQ, THX?

beside, who want to watch hd on a small screen computer monitor?  In my opinion, the hd-dvd add-on for the xbox360 is still not worth the purchase, even if it\'s inexpensive than its competitor.  Because if you add the cost of that with the xbox360 console, it just cost as much, or more expensive and there might be features missing that are there on a stand-a-lone hd player such as hdmi connection, sure the newer more expensive xbox360 has the hdmi, but with that money, spending it on stand-a-lone hd player is more valuable...
