Computer trouble
« on: April 27, 2008, 07:47:11 PM »
Alright, this might get kind of confusing because i had problems before, replaced some stuff, and now am having problems again (they arent related at all..totally different symptoms).

First off, here are my specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ dual-core
Biostar Mobo 6100
Geforce 7900
2 GB of RAM
60 GB hard drive

Cant think of any other important specs

Anyway, at first it would make clicking sounds and sound like it was constantly rebooting (sometimes it does that, sometimes it doesnt). The times it didn\'t it would get stuck at the windows loading screen.

So i replaced the harddrive with an old 80gig harddrive and it stopped doing the rebooting thing, but it would only let me half-install windows (i have to install windows 98, then install my upgrade version of xp). after formatting, it would never get past the Windows 98 loading screen and finish installation.

Now, I put my 80GB harddrive in an old computer, and everything works fine (which is the comp im on now). With my 60GB in the broken computer, it gets to the screen before the windows loading screen and says "Disk Boot failure, insert system disk and press enter" (i should point out, it went back to making the clicking/restarting sound, but it\'s not freezing up the computer like before)

If i put the windows disk in and format, i have a feeling it will format and then get stuck at the windows screen again. I could try that, but i want to try to get a few school things off the hard drive before formatting it.

I\'ve googled the shit out of this, and see a bunch of people with very similar problems, but i never came across a solution.

any ideas?

hmm..now after a day of it being unplugged, my computers working. But the windows loading screen takes a really long time..probably like 3 minutes of it loading on the windows screen. just seems like it\'s going to inevitably crap out again..my best guess is the harddrive since it made the clicking noise once, but didnt do the constant rebooting luckily.

I have a feeling its the heat. Its been really hot here, and i got stuck with my brothers old desk that puts the tower in this little cubby with barely any breathing room.

guess ill just live with it how it is, but i still have a feeling its going to get the problems i had before again

edit: my computer is also really slow lately. Almost like i have 3 other programs running in the background. that makes it sound like a virus, but im pretty sure its not because of all the other problems, like the clicking, which wouldnt be caused by the virus, but the clicking could be causing the slow down

lol..  You can probably get a 10 gig one on sale at goodwill if you look around.  :)

Yeah, my class requires a MINIMUM 500 gig external to do our work.  Not sure how I\'d survive with 60-80 gigs.

vid probably the only one here who does HD video editing.  I\'m getting ready to ramp up my production company and join the terabyte club here soon. :running:

Seriously. I have an 80 in my laptop. Once I started adding music, pictures and stuff on my computer, it filled up really fast. One of my classes required an external so bought a 200 gig and I moved all my music and videos on there. Seems to be working good now. I\'ve still got 3/4 of it left but that\'ll probably change as soon as I start to edit more video. All that\'s on my laptop now are programs, text files and pictures.

Can\'t you do a clean install of XP without installing 98?  I know with Vista I have the upgrade, but I can install it without XP if I wanted to.

Also what others have said - 80GB is pretty small by todays standards.  I don\'t even know if you can get one new anymore.

Whenever i try to install XP directly, it says something like "cannot read cd" or you do not have the correct cd in the drive."

Im going to mess with it this weekend, but it did end up screwing up again like i thought. Now it says "\\windows\\config\\system corrupt"

If my computer worked properly after putting in the 80 gig (since the 60 gig is the one that was messed up) i\'d get a new hard drive. But this weekend im going to try to put everything in my broken computer into this crappy one piece by piece, and when it gets messed up ill hopefully figure out what it is
