*  American football is a derivative of rugby football, and while the feet are used more often in rugby than on the gridiron, much of the game is still played by handling the ball. Both variations are still considered football.

    * North America style football didn\'t used to allow the "forward pass" and much more of the play involved foot work, such as the "drop kick" and the running punt kick. In the first rules, only the " side pass" was allowed, as long as the two players were side by side, with no forward motion of the ball, similar to rugby rules. The Canadian Football League ( CFL ) still allows a drop kick to score a field goal, and also has a thing called a "rouge" when the kicker is able to kick the ball thru the end zone, so it lands out of play , it is worth 2 points. Both the NFL and the CFL still have the drop-kick available as a weapon - on the point-after-touchdown, or from the field for 3 points. The "rouge" is worth a single point in Canada.

If I recall, American football still allows the " drop kick" for a field goal or extra point. Didn\'t Bledso or someone do it for the Patriots a few years back?

You might be thinking of a quick punt maybe? Sometimes a quarterback will take a third and long situation and just get the ball and punt it, trying to get field position when in a 3rd and long and the other team has nobody back to return the kick.

American football contains some action at least. Every play...something happens. The action forces itself.

Soccer...nothing happens save for 5-30 seconds every 90 minutes.

Winner=American Football.

Blasphemy you hoser. Thats exactly the reason people who don\'t like it call it boring in the first place, there isn\'t action every play. Most the time its watching someone gain minimal yardage, stop, reset, repeat.

Yeah every once in awhile something cool like this will happen

type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344">

but its few and far between.

Also thanks to Luke for busting out the knowledge about the origin of its name.

Quit posting YouTube clips. You\'re making me wish it was football season already.

I do have to say. I give props to that dude for getting up so quickly after that hit and for holding onto the ball.

I do think the sounds of helmets smashing is pretty sweet tho.

Thats a little too much celebration for one tackle. I understand that was a good hit and all, but get back to the huddle and get ready for the next play douchebag.

Thats the one thing that pisses me off about football... 2 minutes of chest thumping after every, single, play.

no one ever did answer my question as to why a game where you mostly use your hands was named football

Also this didn\'t warrant a new thread but according to wikipedia Steven Seagal is a homosexual
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_seagal

every american I ask that to online never comes up with a definitive answer.
Don't waste your words I don't need anything from you. I don't care where you've  been or what you plan to do. I am the resurrection and I am the light. I  couldn't ever bring myself to hate you as I'd like.

Few and far between...compared to Soccer, where its EPICALLY far and between. Its already the scoring. Who wants to watch people dump a ball into defenders rinse repeat for 90 mins? Morons that\'s who. In football you have drives, anticipation, action...soccer has nothing of these.

But its the only sport in Europe.

If baseball was the only sport in American then it would be retardedly popular too.
Who is this anamoly we call Jumpman? How is he able to do what he does and still survive after years of torment? It seems he feeds on the hate, growing with an intense passion to put unassuming members in their place.

I thought baseball was popular in the states, national past time and all that

and I never said soccer was the most amazing sport to watch live. I just said I think football is boring. But I will say, highlight reels of football games are quite enjoyable but I just can\'t get into watching it, at home, on my couch. Playing it on the other hand, I think its a blast.

But there is a reason why it doesn\'t catch on around the world the way it does over here.

Regardless, neither of them can hold a candle to the andrenaline pumping action of ultimate frisbee. Thats a real sport, too manly even for the Olympics.

PS: That homosexual comment about seagal on wiki from this morning is already gone. Wiki tampering is funny.
