I Am Alive!

I Am Alive is not based on anything Silone wrote, of course, but the aim is the same: to create an equal playing field, strip away the rules or order that bind society and see what boils to the surface. As a gamer that means making choices. Who to save or kill? Do you search for survivors or food? Money or water? Will you help or hinder a rescue? What could have been a standard survival game, in Ubisoft’s hands, is turning into a nasty, complex glimpse into your soul. And Ubisoft hasn’t needed to put a single mech in the game to do so.

Set in Chicago in the middle of a sweltering June heat wave, a massive earthquake destroys the city and you will have to make choices. You will play as Adam Colins, a 24-year-old junior executive who, two hours earlier was enjoying an expensive coffee and wondering how he was going to get the exclusive corner office. Now his sole goal is to find his girlfriend Alice who is lost somewhere in the city. The earthquake was so devastating it toppled skyscrapers, collapsed bridges and sealed the city off from civilization. It has created an island nightmare where Silone’s vision of equality, of a rule free society has come true. In this new society you don’t buy expensive takeout coffee, you take it.

Played in first-person, this adventure will demand you make core choices: rescue, steal, protect, attack or heal. Adam’s journey to find his girlfriend is fraught with dangers, and the fragile balance of the rubble under your feet won’t be the only concern. Lawlessness has broken out. The streets have become twisted and distorted.

To ultimately find Alice you’ll need to gain access to hidden and secure areas. Align yourself with factions that have formed in the city and befriend other stragglers. There’s a doctor called Riley who has decided to stay in the city and help as many survivors as she can. Maybe if you can find people and take them to her she’ll help you. A fireman, Peter, wants you to bring stragglers to his makeshift refugee camp. Elsewhere, Vigil is an ex-soldier who is protecting a group of helpless survivors; again help him and he’ll help you.

The concept is for a choice-driven FPS in a similar vein to BioShock, where decisions and alliances determine where you can go and what eventually will happen to Alice and Adam. The game will span nine days, suggesting progress is made sporadically with the game opening or locking areas of the story depending on players reaching certain milestones. There’s also the whisper of a deeper conspiracy that points to a man-made reason behind the earthquake.

i was expecting a 3rd person free roam game when i saw the trailer.

still kind of hoping its mroe along the lines of fallout 3, free roam (without VATS) moreso than a bioshock type of game. but ill hold judgements till some screenshots come out

Yeah... i was actually hoping this to be a 3rd person viewed game...i hate FPS\'s. Even tho i\'ve heard fallout 3 is to be played in first person,..i\'m really thinking about getting it, even tho i hear it\'s third person view isn\'t that great...ironically that\'s the only reason why i\'m considering it....well that and i do love the post apocolyptic setting.

the 3rd person view is the last reason to get fallout 3. its only use is to look at the back of your character. and the walking animations are pretty meh

its not really an FPS the same way those other games are FPS\'s though. more about the rpg side of it. like while fighting i fire from the hip maybe 50% of the time..but its oddly more rewarding to kill someone using vats even though you dont really have control. when you kill people without vats its a little anti-climactic

plus the exploring and making decisions/dialogue is a big chunk of the game

This is fight or flight baby, eat or be eaten. The game will be presented in first-person perspective (chosen for its immersive possibilities) and the gameplay itself is looking like a blend of light survival horror (with normal people now turned into roaming predators) and adventure, with multiple solutions possible in certain situations.

The game starts in central Chicago and, as you explore, new areas will slowly reveal themselves. Some confirmed locations include parking structures, a shopping mall, a hospital and office towers. It’s also been revealed that you will be able to revisit previous areas later in the game in order to complete objectives that you may have missed.

With the city’s water supply becoming polluted, this resource will be integral in determining how you tackle in-game situations. Take, for example, the fact that you need to get past a bunch of thirsty survivors who don’t care who they hurt to get their lips wet.

If you have a bottle of water in your inventory there are two main options available. The first is to throw the bottle into the street, use it as a distraction and run past the mob as they brutally fight over it to the death. Option two is to keep the water to yourself, yell, “Bring it on!” and use it to boost your health during the inevitable brawl that will occur subsequently.

Either way, you need to get past these kinds of obstacles in order to help other survivors and search for Alice. Ultimately, Adam will find it his mission to gather together all of the helpless people still alive in the city and direct them to a unified base camp in a bid to gain the attention of rescue crews...

That is interesting.

So called "Disaster-Porn" became popular in Hollywood in the 1970s with films like Airport, Earthquake, and The Towering Inferno.

Now it seems to be making a comeback with current films like Knowing and perhaps games like this?
