Animated GIFs have been around since the early 90s, and for two decades everyone pronounced it "ghif" with a hard G. Everyone except the creators at CompuServe, who for some reason pronounced it "jif," even though that makes absolutely no sense.GIF stands for "graphics interchange format." So unless you also pronounce graphics as "jraphics," it makes sense to say "ghif."And most of the world agrees. Mashable surveyed 30k people around the world and found that 70% of people pronounce it "ghif."The survey asked how people pronounce a few other tech terms, as well.82% of people pronounce meme as "meem," but people in the computer industry are more likely to pronounce it "mee-mee."66% of people pronounce data with a long "a" like "dayta" as opposed to "dat-ah."And there are actually people in the world that pronounce wi-fi as "wee-fee." Five percent of responders owned up to that.
