Run... Like... Hell...
« on: December 14, 2000, 09:32:19 PM »
I found this over at SonyWeb and thought you\'d be interested. The pics are a bit old, but still looking sweet as all hell. Some of the gameplay details sound kick ass too.

---------
Captain Nick Conner—the game\'s protagonist has just returned to the Forseti space station after a routine study of the nearby world, Centauri II. However, on arrival our good Captain discovers that the ship has been invaded by a mean, not to mention hungry life form of unknown origin. Most of the crew have been wiped out, and now, not only must you survive, but you need to find out what the alien\'s intentions are and if necessary, stop them.

Nodding off already are we? Yeah, the plot isn\'t highly original. In fact, it\'s remarkably similar to Jaleco\'s effort, Carrier. In which an organism known as ARK overruns a high-tech sea vessel, and it\'s your job to stop it. With all that said though, we only know the basic plotline and there\'s sure to be a number of surprises and shocking revelations as the game progresses.

One thing that immediately struck me as odd though was the fact that the aliens kidnapped your wife. Huh!? Now why on earth would they kill off the ship\'s crew and take your wife hostage? Now I know that these aliens are supposed to be smart and all, but that just seems rather weird to me. Why create any sort of motivation for the guy to retaliate? Give him his wife and jettison the two of them into outer space. But alas, my human brain is not meant to comprehend such matters.

Regardless of how the story turns out, the meat of any Survival Horror title is the tension and atmosphere the game manages to create, combined with the odd heart-pounding scare. And in that regard, RLH looks to deliver. The invading creatures for starters, are incredibly versatile, adapting to situations as needed. Some serve as scouts, others as warriors, and yet others as slimy muck (goo if you prefer) that has the ability to corrode metal.

I can see the Indiana Jones-inspired chase scene now. You run down a dark corridor as a tidal wave of alien cra... er, goop fills the corridor behind you. How the sequence ends however, is all up to you. Let\'s just hope it\'s not in a pile of ash. But I digress, not only are these creatures strong, but they\'re incredibly smart as well. For instance, one creature has the ability to chop off a human head and then wear it. Aside from being incredibly gross though, it does serve a purpose. Because, in doing so, the creatures gains all of the knowledge of it\'s victim. Yowsa.

Of course, it doesn\'t end there. The creature also has the ability to chop off a crewmember\'s arms, thereby allowing it to use its newfound appendages and knowledge to gain access to the ship\'s computer terminals. Oh, just think of the possibilities! Not content to make the creatures just strong and smart, the developers have made these things incredibly persistent as well. What this means, is that you\'re going to have to do a whole lot of running, because while you can run faster than these aliens, they can open any door you close. Following you wherever you go.

Run Like Hell is becoming an incredibly apt title, don\'t ya think? Even in it\'s incredibly early state, RLH is looking very good indeed. Detailed character models and ambient lighting effects are only the beginning, as these early screenshots indicate. The final game is said to feature fully-3D environments, as well as dynamically placed cameras that help create a cinematic look and feel.

Sounds like developer-speak for "very similar to Resident Evil" to me, but hey, who am I to judge. Besides, any game that has a group of fugly monsters bent on your destruction in it, can\'t be all that bad. I only hope that eventually we get to stop running, and make with the killin\'. \'Cos the only thing better than running from fugly monsters, is making them go splat.

Speaking of violence, the gore levels in the game seem to be just a tad higher than what we\'ve seen from previous games in the genre. One particular scene for example, shows a captured human who consists of only a head and an arm. Not exactly the sort of thing you\'d expect to show to kids, so a mature rating is looking rather likely indeed. And if John Carpenter is involved with the project... well, we\'ve all seen Halloween and The Thing now haven\'t we?

Several Hollywood actors are said to be working on the project, including the likes of Lance Henrikson—known for his work in Aliens and Millennium amongst others. Apparently, John Carpenter has also been contacted, with that hopes that he would help develop camera angles for the game. Though, to be perfectly honest, this doesn\'t strike me as a great selling point, because as best as I can recall, not many titles featuring Hollywood actors have ever been very good. But, we\'ll just have to wait and see I guess.

Slated for release in spring 2001, Run Like Hell is definitely one to keep an eye on. Whether it manages to become a worthwhile addition to the Survival Horror genre or not, only time will tell.

It\'s looks like a very promising horror-survival game, and not a RE-type game. Very intresting indeed.

I like the possibility that John Carpenter may be involved. Now, if there\'s one guy who knows how to give people the willies, it\'s him.
