About half of all PS4 owners are subscribed to PlayStation Plus, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai revealed in a corporate strategy meeting. With 7 million PS4 systems sold as of April 6, that means at least 3.5 million of them are PS Plus subscribers. According to Hirai's prepared speech delivered at the meeting, PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network hosts more than 52 million users worldwide.PlayStation Plus was first introduced on PS3 but was made a requirement for online multiplayer on PS4, which has likely contributed to its popularity.Though Hirai noted that more than 20.5 million games have been sold for the system so far, he pointed out that even PS4's hardware is profitable on its own:"From a profitability perspective, PS4 is also already contributing profit on a hardware unit basis, establishing a very different business framework from that of previous platform businesses," Hirai said, referring to Sony's substantial losses on early PS3 hardware sales.PS4 is "likely" to become more profitable than PS2, the best-selling console of all-time, Hirai added.Despite strong performance from Sony Computer Entertainment, the firm has forecasted a net loss of 50 billion yen (£290m/$490m) for its current fiscal year ending in March 2015.
