Meet the Samsung $1,980 Galaxy Fold Smartphone

Galaxy Fold

Samsung unveiled the highly anticipated Galaxy Fold, a new foldable device creating a new mobile category. Galaxy Fold features the first 7.3-inch Infinity Flex Display, which folds into a compact device with a cover display. The device has been designed for multitasking, watch videos, play games, and more.

The compact device unfolds to reveal Samsung’s largest-ever smartphone display. The internal screen does not merely bend. It folds. Folding is a more intuitive motion, and a more difficult innovation to deliver. Samsung invented a new polymer layer and created a display around 50 percent thinner than the typical smartphone display. The new material makes Galaxy Fold flexible and tough, built to last.

The Galaxy Fold opens smoothly, like a book, and closes flat and compact with a click. To achieve this, Samsung engineered a sophisticated hinge with multiple interlocking gears. This system is housed in a hidden enclosure for a seamless look.

The fingerprint scanner is found on the side where the thumb naturally rests. Two batteries and the components are evenly distributed so Galaxy Fold feels balanced in your hands. Space Silver, Cosmos Black, Martian Green and Astro Blue colors and the engraved hinge with Samsung logo complete the device's finish.

You can slip the device out of your pocket for one-handed calls, texts, and more and open for multitasking and higher quality viewing on a large mobile display for presentations, digital magazines, movies, and AR content.

...

...To ensure everything runs smoothly, even when running three apps simultaneously, Samsung equipped Galaxy Fold with a high-powered, next-generation AP chipset and 12GB of RAM with PC-like performance.

The dual battery system was specifically engineered to keep up with you. Galaxy Fold is also capable of charging itself and a second device simultaneously via Wireless PowerShare, while connected to a regular charger so you can leave your second charger at home.

Besides its Dynamic AMOLED display, the Galaxy Fold offers clear sound by AKG with the stereo speakers.

No matter which way you hold—or fold—the device, a camera will be ready to capture the scene. With six lenses—three in the back, two on the inside and one on the cover—the Galaxy Fold camera system has flexibility built in.

The Galaxy Fold can be paired with Samsung DeX2 for even more productivity power with a PC-like experience. Bixby is supported with new personal intelligence functionalities like Bixby Routines to help anticipate your needs, and Samsung Knox will keep your data and information safe. You can also use teh phone to make purchases with Samsung Pay or use Samsung Health to manage your health and wellness.

The device will start at a whopping $1,980 and arrive on April 26...

Nice that this phone can be fold completely and unfolds too.  Also very nice that this phone's battery can be charge wirelessly and it can charge itself and a 2nd device simultaneously too.  cool.  probably the biggest complaint about it is the price of nearly $2,000.  This is probably for very rich early adopters who wanted the latest of phone technology.  As time goes by and technology improves even more, the price will also go down i hope.

When this phone gets unfolded, it will make a 7.3" screen and i think that is not that big but it almost the size of some tablets though.  probably in the upcoming years,  screen will gets bigger than 7.3" when gets unfolded.

Here is a video description of it:

For comparison, here is a video of Royole FlexPai Smartphone that was unveiled nearly 4 months ago that can be folded but not all the way flat like Samsung Galaxy Fold.  This FlexPai phone folded with a curve in the middle when folded all the way.  At about $1,300, its nearly $700 cheaper than Samsung Galaxy Fold but it has its shortcomings though.

Samsung Touts High Durability of the Galaxy Fold’s Display

The number of times a foldable display can actually fold and unfold is finite, but Samsung says that owners of the new Galaxy Fold smartphone
 should not worry.

Obviously, the material(s) used to make a foldable display cannot withstand fatigue for ever. But Samsung says that the extensive tests of the Galaxy Fold in the company's reliability labs make sure that the Galaxy Fold is ready to come to market.

According to Samsung, the Galaxy Fold can outlast 200,000 folds and unfolds (or around five years of use, if used 100 times a day).

Watch how Samsung ensures that the Galaxy Fold will be up to the task with each and every fold and unfold. Samsung says the durability test takes a full week to complete:

However, Samsung should also make a statement on how long the battery of the Galaxy Fold will remain in good shape.

so if folded and unfolded 100 times a day can last up to 5 years, that mean if gets folded and unfolded 25 times a day can last up to 20 years.  that is a very long time.  very cool.

this samsung galaxy fold has a durability of 200,000 times of getting folds and unfolds just like the royole flexpai foldable smartphone.  Awesome. B)

If I sold my car to buy this, I'd still need to cough up 1000 bucks to pay for it.

yeah, i agree with you that its too expensive.  nearly $2,000 for only 7.3" screen when unfolded is still too expensive.  sure it can be folded and unfolded but not worth the price for now.  maybe in 5 years from now, the price might come down to 1/3rd to 1/4th of its current price.

Samsung will release the Galaxy Fold smartphone next month, but the company has already patented what appears to be a new design for a foldable smartphone.
One of Samsung’s recently revealed patent describes a device that resembles the recently unveiled Xiaomi foldable design - a smartphone that is foldable on two sides around the main body.

The patent, which was spotted by LetsGoDigital, shows a phone with a large flexible display. Unfold the two sides, and you now have a tablet-sized device. Fold the two sides back, and you have a display that covers the entirety of the device.

Other smartphone makers including Huawei (Mate X,) Motorola (RAZR,) Oppo, Xiaomi and LG are expected to release foldable smartphones this year.

Xiaomi's folding smartphone was shared on a video posted on Youtube, as you see below. The short teaser video shows how the device will look like in the unfolded and folded form. You may notice that the device can be folded from two sides.

in other news, samsung is showing another design of its foldable phone prototype that resembles xiaomi's foldable phone that folded on the 2 sides.  In the link, it also show a youtube video of xiaomi foldable phone that folded on the 2 sides.  nice. B)

Should have replied here. It's already getting reports of the fold bulging or peeling in the middle. Not even two days of usage!
