PSone games with optical out?
« on: December 25, 2000, 03:28:54 AM »
Hey! I just bought The Crow this other day, and I was really dissapointed with the sound (the film was great though), but it had only Dolby Surround and did not stream the sound via the optical out...

And then I got thinking if this is the same with the PSone games, I have been thinking of buying FFVII (will a regular 15 block mem. card work with the PS2?), and I would be very dissapointed if I only could play it with my TV sound (well, I can connect the L/R cables to my reciever, but then I have to buy some dubble females, or whatever they are called in english), and I would prefer to play PSone games with digital sound.

Oh yeah, downloaded som Bouncer movies, damn they look sweet!

Thanks in advance.

I am pretty sure that PS1 memory cards only work with PS1 games on the PS2.

I am buying the 15 block mem card so that I can play FFVII, but that was not the question...

The Crow movie?  The optical out should work fine no matter what you are listening to.  CD, DVD, PS1, PS2.  It\'s not really going to sound any better than regular cables though.  Unless the source is dolby digital it\'s really just a cleaner way of transfering the signal, but you won\'t tell much of a difference.  IF it\'s a digital source that you want Dolby Digital or DTS off of, well, that\'s where the difference comes in.

Well thats really strange. It didn\'t work with the optical cable, only with the L/R cables. I have tested many movies, and I am playing TTT and RRV with the optical out, and they work fine.

Has anyone more tested non-DD DVD\'s ?

Hmmmm, the optical out works fine for me with both PSX and PS2 games.  You just have to remember to go under browser setup on the console and switch the optical output setting to PCM.  AC-3 (Dolby Digital) does not work with PSX games, nor with any of the current PS2 games (I think The Bouncer is supposed to be the first PS2 game released in DD 5.1 surround).
