video game sales down last year?

Quote
NEW YORK, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Electronics Boutique Holdings Corp. [ELBO.O] said on Friday sales at stores open at least a year declined by 6.6 percent in the nine-week holiday period ended Dec. 30 from a year earlier.

The West Chester, Pa., retailer of electronic games said in a statement that total sales were $266.1 million, up 1.7 percent from $261.7 million a year earlier.

Comparable sales benefited from a 51.8 percent increase in video game hardware sales, driven by sales of the PlayStation 2, the notoriously short-supplied game console from Sony Corp. [6758.T].

Off setting this increase were declines in sales of Pokemon trading cards, toys - primarily Pokemon-related - and software for the original PlayStation. Increases in these categories, as well as Sega Enterprises Ltd.\'s [7964.T] Dreamcast products, had strongly benefited last year\'s comparable-store sales, which were up 12.2 percent.

Electronics Boutique said it expects that higher sales of hardware systems and decreased sales of higher-margin Pokemon trading cards and related toy products will result in lower than anticipated gross margins for the fourth quarter.

pokemon must DIE

I agree with our kommunist leader here.

About time for Pokemon fever to calm down a little... hmmm... Pokemon has already spoiled many children, driven many parents to near death... not forgetting that our dear Pika and co. has emptied a few wallets too much.

Hmmm.. interesting news about DC sales.

and what means notoriously anyway? :)

Duran Duran..Yum.;)
hah.

Pokemon is already dying down quite a bit in my opinion. You don\'t see near as many kids (at least where I live) fighting over the trading cards and such now. Kids have short attenion spans. I liken the Pokemon craze to the late 80\'s Teenage Mutuant Ninja Turtles craze. They sold like crazy for awhile and then the kids got bored of them.

Girls on Film (not to mention the R-rated european video for this song ;))

Just a few top notch Duran Duran songs :)

heh, I remember and experienced the Teenage Mutant Hero Ninja Turtles -fever; I was also a big fan of Toxic avengers\'. But hey, I was a kid :)

But Kowabunga! Turtles had something there. Now Pokemon.. it\'s just a kiddy serie with cute animals. Where has the blood-thirst gone? Now kids want to pet cute pets ( *puke ) :)

nah, nothing wrong with that...

but what\'ll be the next children attractor I wonder?

oh no not another "remember the 80\'s" thread, LOL.  Actually, I love the 80\'s moreson then the 90\'s and so far moreso then the 21st century.  The 80\'s brought us Airwolf, Knight Rider, and the immense popularity of Punk Rock, ET, and Back to the Future.  Lets also not forget the Terminator :)  Ah, the 80\'s, what a great decade. :)

I lived only half of that decade, Ruy, but I had my toys and video\'s to step back in time with.

Terminator, Back to the future; they\'re really great movies :) Hmmm.. what else did 80\'s bring us? I was born of course and my little sister...

But really now I know what will be the coming children attraction. Yes, Harry Potter figures and trading cards! Children already love the books; now there\'s a movie coming out with all the perirephals...

Remember LotR? This is coming to be as big... but I think never as famous, or everlasting. This is a book children read. I read the philosopher\'s stone and it was good, yes, but it hadn\'t got that "magic". To tell the truth it was kinda ripoff... those wizards were imaginazed just like Tolkien did ( for the hat and the cape ), but they are old fools there :) Nothing like Great Gandalf the Grey :)

hmmm... should I change my name and pic? GANDALF THE GREY... now THERE\'S A NAME ;)

The 80\'s was awesome. The Cure, Depeche Mode, Bad Hair bands and such.

Anyways back on topic. I wouldn\'t be suprised that after this year that Pokemon isn\'t almost completely dead. THat is unless Nintendo comes up with some great idea on how to gain more kids attenion. But, as I said earlier. Kids have short attenion spans. Not to mention Digimon kicks Pokemon\'s ass.:D

I think you had to grow up in the 80\'s to appreciate them. While I wasn\'t old enough to apreciate the music, I was very into the ninja turtle thing. I had 2 older brothers who got me into the music and the 80\'s skateboarding scene, but they arn\'t to fond of the 80\'s themselves.
