I\'m afraid so.  If the DVD is gold-backed I don\'t even try it b/c I know it won\'t work.  But sometimes the silvers won\'t work either.  Smackdown 2 locks up on the loading screens 90% I try it.

I just received an e-mail from Sony over this little letter I sent to their site: (I thought maybe someone would be interested)

my letter to Sony
Dear Sony, I will start by saying I\'ve always been satisfied with my Playstation and with other Sony electronics I\'ve bought. However, I am deeply disappointed in the performance of my Playstation 2.
I have read your consumer alert on your PS1 games that perform differently.  Well, I can say there are more titles than are listed on your site. This problem doesn\'t concern me half as much as the poor DVD playback. Four of the Five DVDs I\'ve played in my PS2 will only play halfway through the movie with severe problems thereafter making them unwatchable.
I have already contacted your tech support and described these problems. Your representative\'s response was that GOLD-backed DVDs don\'t play back properly due to an anti-piracy routine installed on the PS2 to detect GOLD-backing. There was no reason given for the faulty playback or NO playback thereof for PS1 games.
Your representative said that Sony was working with DVD makers to stop production of GOLD-backed DVDs, as a resolution to this problem. I don\'t understand this.  CDR\'s are available in many colors, blue and green just to name a couple.  And even if Sony did succeed in stopping the production of all GOLD-backed DVDs, what would that do for the thousands already in existence? Furthermore, how am I to know what color the back of a DVD is when I purchase it?
Here\'s what really troubles me:  I told the tech support rep that I wanted to start buying DVDs and his response to me was "Don\'t." So where does that leave me? I\'m afraid to buy DVDs for fear of them not being compatible and I don\'t want to buy PS1 games for fear that they won\'t work properly or at all.
I just feel as if I\'ve payed 100% of the cost for a product that has only 33% functionality.  Let me share with you what happened to me tonight:

I had company over tonight who all brought food and we got together to play    Madden2k1, and to watch a DVD on my PS2, and listen to its surround sound on my new Sony DTS receiver. Halfway into the movie, The Replacements, which I rented, the glitches and skips started appearing and the movie became unwatchable. So my company sat in my apartment doing nothing while I, the host, had to go back to the rental store to exchange the DVD for VHS.

Sony, please come up with a solution and quickly. I\'ve spent $300 on a system that doesn\'t perform as it should, and with a small game library.

Thank you,
Rob Benton

Enjoy my PS2 I do, but unfortunate it is for everyone who can not... and see threads like this annoys a lot...

I hope you\'ll get it back more sooner, Twisted, that it will be a nice surprise to get it more early... It\'ll get back just for the GOOD GAMES...

Well that\'s comforting! Of all the effort I put into importing a US PS2 to where I live, the UK, and now knowing about the defects, problems, malfunctions, explosions.. ooohhh the horror.. the horror. Anyway, if my US PS2 do break down, can it still be repaired in the UK? Well, I know I have to pay for the repair service (dammit  ). What happened to the ol\' Sony quality products?
Lucky Euopean PS2 buyers! Tho\' they have to wait a little longer, they got the best of the bunch!

Thanks for the support.  I sent that letter in Saturday night and I got a reply this morning with a case ID so hopefully I\'ll get an exchange or a repair.  I have a bad feeling my box is shot.

The gold-backed DVD problem has been declared an "open item" by Sony.  That means that if a fix is found that people who are not under warranty anymore can still send their system in to be repaired at no cost, except for shipping I\'m sure.

I\'m still waiting on a call.  I gave them my work & home # b/c I want this over with ASAP.  I can\'t stand loose ends and this is a biggen\'

Out of 11 tested DVD\'s, all I can get to run now is Gladiator and Romeo Must Die.

I havent had problems with games yet, hope I never do. When the shipments come in MArch, I\'m returning mine. I need to watch Road Trip!

I have a problem with mine here in the uk.  It is mainly a problem with the A/V port that I have a problem with.  It just keeps cutting out the signal from my ps2 to the TV.  I phoned Sony and they are sending out a replacement via courier, who will then take my old one back.  I should be up and running again on Friday 12th.

Thank you Sony.
