The Sega Factor!

Famitsu recently interviewed 200 videogame retailers to hear what they thought about Sega\'s recent decision to become a third-party developer. Here are some of the questions that were asked.

Will this have an impact on the videogame industry?
Yes 53.6%
No 24.8%
Yes, it will have a large impact 15.8%
I don\'t know 5.8%

Which hardware would you like for them to develop for?

PS2 48.9% (Seems to be what the users want. Could help PS2 software sales.)
Gamecube 16.8% (Would be a good balance w/ Nintendo\'s games aimed at younger users. Would like to see Nintendo rebound. This, along with the Gameboy Advance are going to sell well.)
Xbox 11.2% (Targets similar users as Sega. The increase in hardware competition could revive the market.)
GB Advance 11.2% (Would be fine if Sega remade their older titles. Would like to see them push the limits of the hardware. The GBA seems likes it\'s going to sell very well.)
PSone 8.6%
Other 2.3%
WS Color 0.5%
No preference 0.5%

Virtua Fighter 4 was the most anticipated title, but surprisingly, a game from the Tsukuro! series (Let\'s Make A Professional Baseball Team, etc.) was second followed by Sakura Wars and no preference.

Hmmm.. PS2 got most votes. interesting.

Virtua Fighter 4 will be good; but I really do hope Sega\'d bring Shenmue 2 to other consoles!

i think that good they wet out and did a poll to see who wanted what and though what with the dc demise, i think sega will still be tearing it up even if its not n it own platform, i traded my snes for a genesis, wich a grip of peeps thought was stupid of me but i didnt care cause i liked it, and sega going to ps2 will be great

I dont know if Sega\'s first attempt on a different system would allow for the crazy amount of textures in Shenmue 1 or 2. Good Luck if they try though.

hey! this is sega we are talking about (guys who mastered the saturn) so yes I think their first ps2 game will look amazing. And about the texture issue, ps2 can do it, using the streaming tecnique and balancing all the other graphical effects on the VU1 and VU0 wouldn\'t be a problem for sega! ;)

Sega could do it, but I doubt they do it. If anything we\'ll see future chapters (after 2) on the PS2.

Here is my question. What about Visual Concepts? If they do decide to develop the 2K series for the PS2, what about the online features? PS2 online gaming isn\'t up and no one knows when it will be up. No one will settle for VC going back to no online features in their game, esp\' Sega fans who played games like NFL2K1 online.

Would you rather see VC dissappear until online play is up for the PS2? Or take the feature out and then make the games still?

Sony Japan says that the first batch of online games for PlayStation 2 will become available by spring.
Nine game developers, including Square, and six peripherals manufacturers have announced plans to adopt modem technology based on US firm "Conextant Systems" which will enable online gaming.

Square is aiming to have an online version of its popular Final Fantasy RPG out by next year and Enix has a version of Dragon Quest lined up for release later this year.

This is great news, It took DC roughly about a year to get seganet up, Sony will have its Online Technology up and running before the releases of Gamecube and Xbox!:D

I still remember the deep sound my jaw did dropping down whan I saw Virtua Fighter 2 of Sega Saturn!! It blew away Tekken graphically and I was so proud of my psx...I can\'t forget...
Sega used the Second Chip and...Whaoooo!!...the result was stunning!
I can\'t imagine what the unbounded talent of AM2 can produce with 2 Extra Processors and Textures in Mpeg2 format streming from the DVD:D
I\'m confident AM2 will push the PS2 like no other:D

there isn\'t a Sega game I\'m interested in coming ot the PS2 yet

I wouldn\'t mind soem Sega RPG\'s but nothing has yet to be announced offically from Sega on the PS2 that I will buy.

I also want Sega to develope a new platformer or somethign similiar for the PS2 (IMO) something beyond Sonic and geared towards the older platforming crowd like me.

Nintendo and Sega teaming up is awesome for Nintendo fans cause they need some quality games like that, and Sega is teaming up with a few Sony 3rd parties which will give us a handful of games but details are too thin

Still I want some original new content from Sega on the PS2 but I don\'t think they will do anything like that for anohter year cause they are still working with the DC as well as everything else

I agree with DoubleD.  I might be interested in 1 or 2 current Sega ports to the PS2, but it\'s time for something new.

Ddaryl,  do you remember Chakan?  I haven\'t heard anything on it in a long time.  And it\'s slated for fall 2001 for the DC.  I bet you anything you\'ll see it on another platform.  Same goes for Toejam and Earl 3.  I\'m really hoping that Ecco Online will make it to another system that could realize it\'s full potential as the most beautiful game ever.  (DC made it look really good, but I couldn\'t help imagine what Hanging Waters would look like without pop-up!?!?)

And what\'s wrong with Sonic?  Childish?  Didn\'t you say you enjoyed Rayman 2?

A new Panzer Dragoon would be nice.

Or even a sequel to Panzer Dragoon Saga !
I met him 15 years ago, I was told there was nothing left, no reason, no concious, no understanding and even the most rudamentory sense of life or death, good or evil, right or wrong, I met this 6 year old child with this blang pale emotionless face and, the blackest eyes, the devils eyes, I spent 8 years trying to reach him, and then another 7 trying to keep him locked up because I realised what was living behind that boys eyes was purly and simply evil.
