BMW\'s 2000 Profits Fall Short

Some analysts blame Sony and the PlayStation 2 on BMW\'s failure to meet its expectations.

The German automobile manufacturer, BMW, reported on Thursday that while its profits for 2000 saw a 50% increase over the previous year, that the company failed to meet expectations. The luxury carmaker said profit from ordinary activities rose to 1.663 billion euros ($1.51 billion) last year from 1.11 billion in 1999.
Analysts polled by Reuters had expected BMW, freed of its UK Rover unit, to post a profit from ordinary activities of around 1.97 billion euros.

"Some people were expecting BMW to have a fantastic 2000, but it turned out to be just very good," said one London-based analyst.

It is believed that the cause of BMW\'s failure to meet expectations was a one-off charge that the company had to endure, but other analysts believe otherwise.

According to U.S.-based analyst, David Zdyrko, "BMW should be blaming Sony for the company\'s sub par performance in 2000. If Sony had shipped more PlayStation 2\'s in Japan, North American and in Europe, BMW would\'ve sold more cars. It\'s as simple as that."

Industry experts also point to delays of Sony\'s flagship PlayStation 2 racing game, Gran Turismo 3 A-spec, which features a few BMW models.

As maintained by Zdyrko, "If Gran Turismo came out on PlayStation 2 last year, automobile sales across the world would have been doubled. By delaying the game, Sony put a lot of hard working individuals out of work and the world economy is hurting because of it."

You can add BMW to the long list of companies that are hurting right now because Sony has only managed to ship more consoles in its first year than any other hardware manufacturer before it. Sony should be ashamed!

Haha that is the dumbest thing I have heard in a long time... Though now that you mention it I do believe Sony is responsible for Global warming I mean think about it everytime we turn on a PS2 it uses energy which just adds to this problem. Shame on you Sony you\'re ruining our ozone layer.

 The PS2 is the fastest selling console of all time, partial blame for lost profits can be blamed on Sony, but the trend by lots of gaming companies losing money or by analyst was just blame Sony.

No console has ever sold 7 million units in 10 months before. The PS2 has done this, dev losing money need an easy scapegoat

I\'ve always liked BMWs, but in the past 2-3 years they haven\'t done anything special. i.e., the back of the 3 series still looks like a Honda Civic, the M3 is not being produced fast enough, and they\'re still rear wheel drive. It must suck during the winter.

Besides, there are quite a few people buying the Audi A4 and S4 cars.

My bro. had problems this winter.
First he had winter tyres, and the snow melted so he changed back to slicks.
Then the snow came back and he was to lazy to change back to winter tyres.. HHEHE!
So It took him 20mins to park the can outside the mall.

what the hell is wrong with the fact that BMW is rear wheel drive!!!!!!!!!

Having cut my teeth in my early years of driving in Rear wheel drive vehicles (and that was some time ago), And having had to suffer endless Front wheel drive cars (not particulaly keen on Beemers), such as RS turbo, Clio williams, And my current Mondeo 2.5 V6 manual, (although all these cars were fast, the steering feedback and control is nothing compared to RWD)UUGGGGHHHHHH  I hate em all compared to My earlier RWD cars like my capri.

 all the fwd cars ive ever driven of high performance (cause your lowly family small engined under powered FWd cars arent worth discussing),twitch the steering in corners when under power, understeer like a B#itch, and generally dont give you the same sensation of grip, control and the cars limits as performance RWD.

Believe me controlled Oversteer in a RWD is a hell of a
lot more fun, than the strainingg for grip understeer or torque steer from any FWD.

Yes they can be hairy in the wet, but so can FWD.

BAh come on all you manufacturers give us MORE rwd cars for REAL drivers to play with.

Its joke son, IGN having a little fun with some of the lame Blame Sony for profit losses.  Sony is being blamed but in reality the PS2 is the faastest selling console of all time. BUT given the launch debacle it was easy for companies to just point there finger at an easy target
