before i even read the question, my initial reaction was up...however, after reading the question, i have mixed feelings towards the issue...if its up, it fits in with everything else nicely, but you dont get to see the big purple PS2 Logo, also, whenever i plug in my multitap, i have it on horizontal, i dont want the whole freakin thing to fall over

if its horizontal i can put my drinks on it

Horizontal.  It fits my setup better.

As I have not come to notice the "noise" issue related to positioning with my particular unit, which way I rest it depends completely on where I set it up in my house.

Downstairs in my den, it sets in the entertainment center along with the other component system gear.  Therefore, it rests horizontally.

Upstairs in the master bedroom, I have a vertical computer workstation next to my 54" projection tv.  In that location, I like to squeeze my PS2 vertically next to my pc monitor within the workstation and then connect the PS2 thru my VCR & then play out to the big screen tv.

BTW, two things related to my passing PS2 through my VCR.  1st: I have yet to get the "macrovision" problems that others have indicated they\'ve suffered when playing DVDs through a VCR to a tv [I just count myself fortunate here...], and 2nd: Passing through the VCR allows me to vid-tape games I play...  And what I\'ve been *doing* with these tapes is absolutely torturing a good friend & co-worker by letting him view the tapes at home to see what he\'s missing not owning a PS2 himself.  Well, while ATV Off-Road Fury pushed him hard into consideration of purchasing a PS2, letting him watch me play the MGS2 demo sent him over the edge!!!  Another member joins the ranks of PS2 owners.

"Um...since Im already mostly to the bottom...Down."
"Down?"
"She chose Down?"
"Was the the wrong answer?"
"Too late now"
