I felt the same when i saw the first TGS video of Silent Hill 2. It totally blew me away.
It was only a few fragments of the trailer but i don\'t remember something as scary as this, not even in a movie. The atmosphere of the game is obscure, oppressive and disgusting, you just couldn\'t see the screen without feeling nervous.
Just see that scene, when the protagonist is into an old and dark hospital, and the radio starts to emit that strange sound. He knows there\'s something approaching him, so he starts to search on every direction until he heards an intermittent sound like if someone was dragging with difficulty something metallic.
You can hear how the sound and your edginess grows in intensity with each creature\'s step, and it finally appears, slowly, and you start to think "God, is that human?" no, no, that can\'t be human!".
And as you said, all that realistic shadows cast by the lantern and that scary sounds make all the experience worst( if that\'s possible  ).
Konami has made the true next generation horror game.
