"Battle of the Consoles" - Steven Kent [LONG]

Here is an interesting article that can be found at MSNBC.com.
My apologies if this has been posted already.

April 11 —  Whether they called it by its original code name, Dolphin, or by the GAMECUBE handle under which it will be released, Nintendo executives have spent the last two years telling the world that their 128-bit game system was going to be an industry leader.

THE PROBLEM WAS that they lacked credibility. To date, they have yet to give specific information about GAMECUBE’s performance; and one of the few things that they were very specific about was completely wrong — the original year 2000 launch date.

That said, it is easy to see why many game company executives, analysts and journalists took a cynical view of GAMECUBE. This cynicism was especially understandable when you consider how aggressively competitors Microsoft and Sony were about publishing the performance specifications of their Xbox and PlayStation 2 hardware.
(MSNBC is a Microsoft-NBC joint venture.)

With this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo only six weeks away and Nintendo’s proposed July release of GAMECUBE rapidly approaching, information about GAMECUBE is beginning to surface. Amazing as it sounds, Nintendo may have been right all along — GAMECUBE very well may be the winning system of the 128-bit generation.

Go here to get the reasoning behind that statement. Please read it before you post.

I think this is a pretty interesting perspective on everything. What do you guys think.

BTW, I tried to post the full article but I guess there a maximum length for posts. Something like 10000 characters.

This is one of the few well-researched articles on gaming from a non-gaming website. Although Steve Kent is a gaming industry vet.

I found a new sig in there:

Miyamoto may be human, but his games are legendary and they have generally defined each new generation of game machine

So true so true.

As for the article; he brings up a lot of interesting points and I enjoyed reading it despite it\'s vast amount of words. I likes the way he describes Nintendo\'s attempt to make great and enjoyable games to use as their weapon to generate high sales. They\'re focusing on games, that\'s why their actually making a game machine. They want their games to make them profits and good hardware sales.

Nintendo may not win this generation, but atleast the\'ll definately do good.

I haven\'t gotten the chance to read the article (yet).. but I do think Gamecube will fare well. Maybe Nintendo\'s \'hush-hush\' route was the way to go.

I can\'t wait till E3 to see what they finally unveil.

Nice written article.
Nintendo has many chances to gain its unique spot in gaming.
It seems that each console will stand in its own spot.

PS2 will be the console with a great quantity of good titles.DVD could mean cinematic games a la MGS2.Also it helps in games that need lots of Data like GT3.
The disadvandage is that DVD copies will be cheap to make soon.Mini Disks are likely not to have pirated copies.
A disadvandage about Sony is its tools which are very hard for the developers to use.
Sony is trying to make developers to keep supporting the console though and by no means I dont think they are going to stand with their hands tighten doing nothing about it when GC and XBOX are released

http://194.47.16.181/forums/showthread.php?threadid=8270

PS2\'s brand name already caught a big part in the console market with many hardware sales and many great titles are in development for the console.Internet,HDD,compatibility with digital Cameras etc will bring more oportunities in console gaming. Also PS2 is showing off its true capbilities while time passes and improvements will be more noticable.

GameCube on the other hand will be the console with the most unique games.Legendary:) games.PS2 will have its classic games but GC will have the most of he ones that stands out.Ease in developing will mean cheaper games too.I dont know how much a DVD mini disk costs though.
Also Nintendo\'s having kids as it s main target has its disadvandages and advandages.
The average age of gamers is around 24 yeras old.
The advandage is that instead of straggling to "steal" consumers from XBOX and PS2 battling out who is going to have the biggest number of more mature gamers Kids will have GameCube as their console of choice. No other console will be there to compete Nintendo\'s target.

XBOX is a monster if 100 million polygons are with all effects at once.
Bill Gates is spending $500million bananas just to promote XBOX in the console market. He has got the money he can do lots of things.
Its easy to develop on XBox reports say as it uses normal pc languages and DirectX.But this is MS\'s first move into console gaming.
Japan dont like MS very much and its size is another problem.Jpan is a hard market for XBOX.US and Europe though(especially US) are easy markets.PS2 already has the name of the most succesfull console, and Nintendo also has the experience and the games guaranteed.

XBOX has a strong development support mainly from PC developers and Tecmo and Sega are the ones that mostly stand out.Sega is doing 11 titltles and Tecmo DOA3  for XBOX which is a very strong thing for MS.

Most of the games though are PS2 ports and mainly PC ports.
How this will affect gamers thoughts about purchasing XBOX is still unknown as many will already own a PS2 and almost everyone owns a PC.

These are my thoughts on the article together with some of my own opinions.

XBOX will be the graphics console
