It may not be much to look at, but your games will look a whole lot better.
Redant\'s PS2 VGA Box isn\'t going to overwhelm you with a thick instruction manual; the instructions are printed on the back of the box. It isn\'t going to impress you with its eloquence either; it\'s an import with mangled English that allows "you to situate in the enjoyment as in dreamland." And to be honest, its technology isn\'t going to give you VGA out either; it\'s really a line doubler. But it is the first piece of tech that will allow PS2 owners to see the glory of their new console on a monitor, and it does its job well. There will undoubtedly be real VGA adapters in the PS2\'s future, but for now, we can easily make do with this one.
There\'s a reason computer monitors cost a hell of lot more than same size TVs; their tubes support much higher resolution, for reading tiny little lines of text like the ones you\'re reading right now. But this also means that PC games can come in much, much higher resolutions than TV\'s standard 420 X 380. HDTV will change all that, but for now, if game players want a better picture, they will need a special VGA adapter. Redant\'s VGA Box is actually a line doubler, meaning that it boosts the signal that the PS2 is already putting out, rather than separating and sending only the VGA signal to the monitor.
That\'s all very interesting, but does it work? Yep. It works great. We tested it out on a standard 19" Samsung PC monitor and on a 27" Gateway Destination setup, and in both cases we got a great picture. The relatively small text in SSX was crisp and easily readable, and the colors were bright and vibrant. There was some increased anti-aliasing and artifacting between and object and the background, but it was so slight that it didn\'t make us want to go back to the TV.
The only real problem with the VGA Box is that it takes up a memory card slot and does not automatically detect a signal from the PS2. Its unusual configuration means it lies behind the PS2, but with a cord that comes around to either the left or right memory card slot. It also has to be switched on manually, which means users will have to keep it within reach, instead of safely tucking it away.
The PS2 VGA Box also includes a stereo out port and an AV multi-out, so gamers can keep it plugged into a television, switching back and forth between a TV and a monitor, if they so desire. It\'s a handy little device, and great for players who would prefer to play their PS2 on a computer. It isn\'t perfect, but we\'ll take it.
