Here\'s an idea I had for Final Fantasy, posted about a year ago somewhere else.
People are saying that FF needs some innovation?
Here\'s my plan to revolutionize battles.
Throw away the ATB. We won\'t even be using menus and commands. This will be true, real-time fighting, with interactive backgrounds and plenty of physics. All battles will be set in a Powerstone-like environment. It will obviously have to be closed in to some extent. You are fighting in a forest. The battlefield will be 3D, and you can maneuver yourself anywhere in it. There may be a stream running through the field, trees here and there, bushes, maybe even a small copse. The actual fighting would go this way: Obviously if it\'s realtime, you can only control one fighter, the computer (or other players:)) would control the other 2 or 3 you have with you. You and your enemies would both move toward each other. If you have a sword, you have to get in close to your enemy to fight him, if you have a spear, not as close, and if you have a bow and arrows, you can snipe from a distance. To actually fight, you would press an attack button, but your enemy is attacking you at the same time, so sometimes you\'ll have to push a block button to try to prevent taking damage. Also, you will have a stamina bar, which will decrease as you attack and restore when you are not, which will prevent you from backing an enemy into a corner and thwacking away mercilessly. When your stamina runs out, you have to retreat and catch your breath for a few seconds. Even if your stamina is gone, you can still attack, but you won\'t be able to attack as frequently or with as much power, and you will be slower to move and block as well. If you or your enemy is struck in the back, you will take much more damage. A magician will have to find a safe spot where they can concentrate long enough to case a spell. Getting hit will break the concentration, and they will have to start over, so mages will want as much protection as they can get. Also, the higher the spell level is, the longer range they could manages, etc. The more injured you get, the slower you become, but you get more powerful (your fear of death is raging your strength), but you are less focused and thus your accruacy is lowered (bad for magicians)
You will also use the terrain to your advantage. Let\'s go back to the forest. You might try to knock over a tree to hamper your enemies\' movement, or to squash one. You could also climb the tree to jump down and attack an enemy, which would do much more damage, but is harder to do and leaves you vulnerable if caught. If you have archers, positioning them in a tree or on a high cliff would increase their accuracy (FPS mode with factors like wind and physics involved!). Or, you could jump into the stream. Say you are fighting magicians. You jump into that stream, and you are underwater, fire spells will have no effect if used against you, however, lightning spells will damage you more heavily, or a high powered Ice spell could trap you down there for awhile, damaging you and effectively removing you from the fight temporarily. There would be other things, if you knock an enemy into a rocky wall hard, the wall might collapse in him and kill him. You could have a float spell that would protect you from the hazards of the environment (and Quake spells), but the wind would move you around, and a strong wind spell would blow you off your feet.
