Q about online gaming??

Since i have a cable modem, what will i need to get online and use my own interent service provider because my dad doesnt want the phone line tied up   Oh yea, and will it cost anything thing

Wait, my cable modem is outside of my computer, it isnt built in, will i still have to buy a new one or is it that everyone has to buy, a modem, hardrive, adaptor and does the adaptor depend on what modem you buy?
