Who Plays Guitar Out There?
« on: June 26, 2001, 03:29:56 AM »
Hi everyone,

Just wondering if anyone here plays guitar. Are you in a band and do you have any demos uploaded? I am starting a new band with a friend of mine. We were in a band when we were in high school and we have been putting together an original set.
Tell me what you have for equipment. Right now I have a Les Paul Standard that\'s about twenty years old. I also have a new Fender American Strat and just bought a Marshall combo.

You have a Les Paul AND a Stratocaster??????  Which side are you on????  :):):)

Seriously, I have a few guitars and I\'m building steel-stringed acoustic guitar right now.  What kind o\' music does your band play?

Cygnus:  According to you, is his name pronounced "Pert" or "Peert"?  This has been driving me crazy for a LONG time!  I think the second pronounciation is correct, but I grew up saying it the first way.  It\'s hard to change.

Coredweller,
I used to be strictly a Gibson man, but I have changed my ways. I got my Les Paul in 1980, and to be honest, it\'s one of the nicest guitars I have ever played, but you can\'t get that Strat sound out of it. I bought the Strat about a year ago and it\'s very nice, but it just doesn\'t compare to the craftsmanship of the Gibson.

A lot of the songs we have written have an alternative edge to it with a little of the 70\'s rock thrown in.

I\'ve never really liked Les Pauls.  I just don\'t like the shape, and I find it uncomfortable.  In addition, I think you can often make a Stratocaster sound like a Les Paul, but you can\'t do the reverse.  All my heros played Strats, so that was my choice from the beginning.  SRV, Hendrix, Clapton, Robin Trower, David Gilmour, Adrian Belew, etc etc.

You\'re right about craftsmanship... up to a point.  The Strat is definitely a mass production guitar, and it always has been.  Nothing about it has a handcrafted feeling in any way.  By comparison, some parts of the Les Paul, like the heel, the slightly carved top, and the neck joint are reminiscent of hand construction (even though they aren\'t handbuilt, strictly speaking).

Since you mentioned 70s rock, do you like Captain Beyond?  I have to ask that of every guitarist I meet.

Coredweller,
I hate to say it but I don\'t no Captain Beyond. Refresh my memory.
You\'re right about Les Pauls being uncomfortable, they weigh a ton. Sometimes I use my Strat just because I don\'t feel like lifting my Gibson.
I\'m thinking of adding another guitar to my collection but I am not sure what to get. I have been eyeing a Parker Fly but they come at a very high price.

I play bass! I got an Ibanez 3005 Prestige, very nice.  I want to get a Warwick Streamer Stage II eventually, but that would cost me $3,600 so.......

Ace:

Buy this record:

Captain Beyond (self titled)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000003CMR/qid=993959958/sr=1-1/ref=sc_m_1/102-8187118-5634539

If you like it, buy these:

Captain Beyond Sufficiently Breathless
Captain Beyond Dawn Explosion

Captain Beyond is one of the most original inventive and brilliant rock bands of the 70s, and yet they\'re still virtually unknown.  All the music greats know of them, and the first self-titled album is a genuine masterpiece. Yes, they only did three albums.  The band reformed recently and have been doing small shows in Florida, but we\'re all hoping they will obtain a contract to release an album and do a national tour.  They are still amazing after all these years.  When I say "we\'re," I\'m referring to the Captain Beyond listserv I\'m on.

Buy the first album, believe me you won\'t regret it.  It\'s a guitar and percussion freak\'s album through and through.
