Tribute to Doom, the game that dominated my life back then

DOOM

This masterpiece of ID software isn\'t yet forgotten. It\'s funny, actually, that at the times of ultra-realistic graphics and story-centered 3d person shooters, Doom still feels a blast from time to time.

It is still full of that magic and atmosphere - perhaps Half-Life once beat it, but H-L never had the same replay-value to me than doom has. I\'ve been playing Doom troughout my short life, for 6 years I\'ve deleted and re-installed the game, and still I think the first and original Doom is the best ( \'tho Doom II got the balls as well ).

Doom was the greatest product of ID-software, Wolfenstein 3d being a close second, and Quake far behind. Now I\'m waiting forward to see what will become of Quake III and Return to Castle Wolfenstein ( \'tho the latter was told to be a disappointment on the E3 show this year ).

And now I\'m trying to gather people with same thoughts and beliefs. Is there any, or am I just strange?

I agree on all you said above :)

ID is working on the next doom version, it will take advantage of the GF3 , Its a shame my PC will never handle it :( :(

I still remember in 1993 when I ran Doom for the first time on a 386 at work.  Seeing that 3D effect on an ordinary PC was astonishing.  It wasn\'t too long after that I decided I needed to buy a PC of my own, so I ordered a 486/66 and thought it was fast.  The relief at finally killing the last boss with a rocket launcher was amazing.  Doom ][ was better, but those first few maps in Doom bring back good memories.  I still use the Doom door opening and closing sounds on my PC.

Good \'ole Doom. I remember playing it since the beta days way back. Grabbing it off of BBSs. Oh these newbies nowadays just don\'t know. I love the age where I\'m @. Where I got to enjoy the old classics and today\'s new technology. I would play Doom for 8 hours straight against a friend, modem - modem. Connecting back then was a b!tch. I must\'ve tried 1000 init strings for my modem. (till I found the best one.) :) Oh well, enough rambling.

LOL!
Tweaking initialization strings is definitely a LOST ART!  Heh heh, I spent much time on this too.  I\'ll be happy if I never have to see an analog modem again in my life. :)

The last level really freaked me out...I think all the levels were incredibly demonic. I was so young when I played that game...that game was awesome, but I don\'t care for it anymore.

I\'ve played both Doom and Doom II.  I have also played Doom64 and it wasn\'t all that great except graphics.  Doom was hands down the best of the series IMO.  Doom II a little changed but not much.  Doom64 a little scary but nothing new. I haven\'t played it for a long time.  It\'s collecting dust. :(

Hello fellow dooManiacs!

I started to play a doom game I never have played - Final Doom. Loaned the cd from a friend - and I have to say it IS demonic, and hard, but not fresh anymore. still a good blast.

Wich one of you have completed Thy Flesh Consumed ( Episode 4 ) on Ultimate Doom?

It is HARD as H3LL on ultra violence.

Although PSO has eaten most of my time in the last month, I gotta say DOOM is still one my favorite games. I dunno what it is.. but it\'s one of the FEW FPS that I can play for hours on end and honsetly say that I enjoyed every second of it. Doom ][ wasn\'t as good in the storyline department, but in enhancments and level design it was superior. I love em both tho. Even more than the FAR superior Rise of The Triad, which I think got stale after the first 15 to 20 lvls.

If you\'re lookin for a new Doom experience, try the Legacy addon. High Rez, up/down aiming, TRUE transperancies, jumping, blood splatters ala DukeNukem3D, and internet multiplayer. I think Solid Snake 88 has all the links you need.

I should try Legacy, yes.

I\'m currently searching Final Doom for PSx, as I have it on computer.

It is quite amazing, that Doom actually IS the only FPs with that true hellish atmosphere - with truly playable levels... I don\'t know - it\'s just good.

And I remember Rise of the Triad! Wasn\'t long ago when I played it, and made levels to it. Darn, the robot-episode ( was it Ep3 ) is HARD on the hardest difficulty!
