I just bought the Iowa Slipknot album !
« on: August 25, 2001, 07:13:51 AM »
Wow ! These guys certainly kept their promise when they said
this album is gonna be more dark and seething than ever.
The cd booklet and art is really cool. It\'s got this dark tech style
with mathematical stuff all over. It\'s printed on this kinda silver coated paper, which gives it a classy look. The band photo on the
inside of the booklet is awsome. You can clearly see the red bandcloth on their right arms with the tribal S in it. I don\'t know if Slipknot thought this out, but it kind of resembles the thing Nazi\'s wore in WOII (you know with the Swastika in it) . So I think that is
a bit on the edge, it can easily be mistaken by ppl who don\'t know Slipknot.
To the subject : the music is absolutely raw and tough. I am really fond of the previous album so this is fairly a big change for
me to hear. My favourites till now are : #2 People=****(sounds more like the previous style, excellent scratchin by Sid! ), #10 I am Hated(almost a pure hiphop song, COOL), #6 the Heritic anthem(Stomp, Stomp ), #8 Left behind( a melodic song) and #9 The Shape.(ehh ?)
If you\'re into the softer kind of nu metal or adidas rock then this album is too Tough for U.
But I suggest you give it a try.

That alone makes me sick to my stomach.
I hate when people try to combine rock and hip hop.

I\'ve downloaded Heretic Song and Left Behind.They\'re OK, not great, but OK.

I think I\'ll stick to death metal.

Well, that\'s just my personal description of that specific song.
Maybe if somebody else hears it, they will describe it different.
Anyway, if you don\'t like that, then you don\'t like that, simple.
BUT ! that is the only song of the album in that style.
I can\'t point out enough this album is way more dark than the
album before. The Heretic anthem and Left behind are really
radio friendly compared to the rest.
I don\'t know what falls exactly in your description of death metal, but I suggest you give the album a chance. Don\'t stay away from it because of my own description of one song. Really this album is sick n hard.

Dude, cannibal corpse and strapping young lad=sucks.  Im a big heavy metal fan.  System of a Down, Static-X, Pantera, METALLICA, I really dig them.  But I mean when you want to talk about who is hardcore and who isnt, and you want to talk about Slipknot not being not "quite there" in the death metal scene you need some incriminating evidence.  Slipknot likes to take craps on stage, light it, and throw it around.  Slipknot likes animal sacrifice.  Slipknot\'s drummer like upside-down stars, the symbol of hell and the anti-christ.  I know its image, but thats what gets you into the death metal catagory.  Sure they try the hip-hop scene a little bit, sure they mellow it out a bit, but if they didn\'t the whole album would be so drab.

No Slipknot ISN\'t death metal.

Their lyrics don\'t innvolve any death metal issues.

Read the lyrics from Cannibal Corpse\'s Tomb of the Mutilated album (their best album IMO), then read Slipknot lyrics.

Then there are lyrics like Glen Benton (Deicide) makes, he writes about his hatred for god, Slipknot doesn\'t.

Their shows more resemble hardcore concerts than death metal concerts.

Do your research before you call Slipknot a death metal band, they are a pretty intense band, and they act crazy on stage but acting crazy doesn\'t make them death metal, the guitar solo\'s, the vocals and lyrics are more important.

Death Metal huh?

So the only thing a death metal song can be about is hating god or mutilating a corpse?  Just because Slipknot doesn\'t write everysong about being a god hater doesn\'t make them not death metal.  Death Metal doesnt have to be indecipherable roaring.  What makes Slipknot what they are is they are such a hard band to place into one catagory.  they have so many different styles that contribute to their Death Metal music that it is a neoDeath Metal if you will.  They are a combination of Slayer (death metal) Fear Factory (somewhat death metal) Static X (more somewhat death metal) and their own unique blend.  To say that you know death metal music and then say Slipknot is not death metal is ignorance.  This isn\'t 1996, there are new death metal bands out there, just cause they\'re popular doesn\'t mean they arent death metal.

Thats my two cents

I hate the classifcation of music, I really do.  Lets just all group it into rock lets say.  That\'s what it really is, i mean come on.  You need to realize that this is marketing.  Inventing new genres is promoting your record.  Oh, something new, NeoMetal, never heard it, ill pick it up.  The reason why I am debating is because i guess (there is such a fine line) death metal is the heavest you can be.  No-one your trying to say Slipknot is not the heavest they can be.  Do me a favor, next time you go to a Slipknot show, ask the band members if they could be a little more heavy so they can reach the death metal status.  I\'m sure they will take it into consideratoin, either that or send you to the pits of hell.

Sheesh doods calm down.

I never said that Slipknot was a bad band or that they weren\'t pretty damned intense on stage, all I am saying that they aren\'t death metal. The styles are completly different.

Slipknot does have death metal backgrounds, the drummer and the base player came from a death metal band called Anal C*nt.

Like Bobbo said they do have death metal elements, but they aren\'t a death metal band.

Demicide, I do relise that times change (and I am a fan of the good\'ol days of pure death metal), and that bands like Slipknot exist that make music that can\'t really be put into one category, all I am saying is that Slipknot while it does have death metal elements it isn\'t death metal.

And most bands change, there aren\'t alot of bands still making pure death metal and still be somewhat known to the outside world, Deicide is still going, but the quality of their music has gone down, Slayer is still making Thrash metal, but bands like Obituary and Incantation for example are virtually unheard of now a days.
