Email attachments with Windows XP???
« on: October 04, 2001, 06:17:54 AM »
Anyone with XP know how to let it allow you to take email attachments?

It doesn\'t allow any that I can see.  It\'s really annoying.  I\'m not a hypocondriac freak that doesn\'t allow any files from friends.  Granted I check the exe\'s first, but I still want my attachments.

I think someone sent me the dude on top of the WTC again and I just want to see the picture for the 50th time!!!

It shows there is an attachment, but it won\'t allow me to retrieve it.  I am using office XP which before I upgraded to windows XP it worked fine.  I just upgraded to windows XP a couple days ago.

I used a beta for about a month several months ago and I stopped for this same reason.
Any ideas?

You can receive an attachment?

I looked through the help and gave some barbledygook about using a seperate server blah blah blah for attachments.  I can\'t remember exactly what it said, obviously.  Just knew it was too technical for me to do at home.

I wonder if there is just a security setting I need to turn off.  I mean how can I get my emailed porno pics if I don\'t get this fixed?

ANyone have any ideas?  I really need to get this fixed because I do an awful lot of graphics work and people email me stuff all the time.  I can\'t open a darn thing.  It says the file does not exist.  It shows that a file was attached, but it\'s like it\'s not downloading the file for some reason.

Are you using Outlook, or Outlook Express, or some other mail program?  Outlook is evil.  Stay away.  Sorry, I know that\'s not helpful.

I\'ve never used WinXP and I don\'t think I ever will.  Win2K is great.

holic,

Works fine for me as well.

Open up Outlook, go to Tools -> Options -> Security tab / and under Virus Protection see if this option is checked;

Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus.

I don\'t see anything else that could prohibit you from seeing attachments, but I\'ll keep looking.

There is nothing involving viruses in that section.  It\'s all about digital IDs.  Here is one thing I found and it explains the problem I have.   Although I don\'t see JPG on the list and I can\'t even get them unblocked:

Attachment file types blocked by Outlook
There are two levels of attachment security. Access to level 1 files is blocked and can\'t be changed. When you receive an attachment with a level 2 file type, you will be prompted to save the file to your hard disk. If you use Microsoft Exchange Server, your administrator can add and remove file types for both levels of e-mail security. If a file type is added to both levels, it will be treated as a level 1 file type.

Level 1
File extension File type
.ade Microsoft Access project extension
.adp Microsoft Access project
.bas Microsoft Visual Basic class module
.bat Batch file
.chm Compiled HTML Help file
.cmd Microsoft Windows NT Command Script
.com Microsoft MS-DOS program
.cpl Control Panel extension
.crt Security certificate
.exe Program
.hlp Help file
.hta HTML program
.inf Setup  Information
.ins Internet Naming Service
.isp Internet Communication settings
.js JScript file
.jse Jscript Encoded Script file
.lnk Shortcut
.mda Microsoft Access add-in program
.mdb Microsoft Access program
.mde Microsoft Access MDE database
.mdz Microsoft Access wizard program
.msc Microsoft Common Console Document
.msi Microsoft Windows Installer package
.msp Windows Installer patch
.mst Visual Test source files
.pcd Photo CD image or Microsoft Visual Test compiled script
.pif Shortcut to MS-DOS program
.reg Registration entries
.scr Screen saver
.sct Windows Script Component
.shs Shell Scrap Object
.url Internet shortcut
.vb VBScript file
.vbe VBScript Encoded Script file
.vbs VBScript file
.wsc Windows Script Component
.wsf Windows Script file
.wsh Windows Script Host Settings file

holic,

What build of XP are you using? The final? There should be a virus protection section, it\'s not actually a section, but the option I mentioned is the third one from the top.

If you can\'t get it to work, try going to an XP site, and asking in their forums. See your private msgs.

Oh, I was looking in the Outlook Security.  I have the final build of both office and windows XP.

Are you talking about outlook when you were talking about tools, etc...?  That was where I looked and there was nothing about virus there.

You probably have to call M$ to send attachments.

You also have to call them when you defrag.

Thank you datamage for not saying, Windows sucks, blah blah blah.  And thank you for those websites.  I got my answer.  I posted it below in case someone else gets this problem once Win XP comes out.

Office XP is a great program.  If you can name another program that has a spread sheet, word processor, email, calendar, etc, that is better than office, then shout out.

Outlook 2002 allows the user to use a registry key to open up access to blocked attachments. To use this key:
Run Regedit, and go to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Office\\10.0\\Outlook\\Security

Under that key, add a new string value named Level1Remove.

For the value for Level1Remove, enter a semicolon-delimited list of file extensions. For example, entering this:

mdb;url

would unblock Microsoft Access files and Internet shortcuts.

If you are using this registry entry, a glance at Help | About Microsoft Outlook will show Security Mode: User Controlled above the license information.

If you prefer not to edit the registry directly, you can use one of these tools to make the change:

Attachment Security Options COM add-in by Outlook MVP Ken Slovak that adds an Attachment Security Options page to the Tools | Options dialog in Outlook 2002. Outlook 2002 only. Free.
DetachXP Standalone utility for Outlook 2002 only to change the list of blocked file attachments according to the level of risk you\'re willing to take. Free.

After applying this registry fix or using one of the above tools, the user still has to save the attached file to a system drive before opening it. In effect, the fix rolls the attachment behavior back to Outlook 2000 SR-1, with its included Attachment Security Fix. An end-user cannot bypass this "save to disk" behavior and open the file directly from the mail message, though an Exchange administrator can.
