Anyone pick of the First season of The Simpsons on DVD?
« on: October 24, 2001, 05:55:03 PM »
I just bought it a few minutes ago

The first season only contains 13 episodes and some bonus features but since they are eventually going to release all of the seasons, i thought i might as well start with the first.

On the inside of the front cover it has a letter from matt Groening to the owner of the DVD

" Welcome to the first of many deluxe overpriced DVD sets of the Simpsons.  With 280- odd shows in the can and no end in sight, you might e able to complete your simpsons DVD collection just before the next format comes along.  Thanks for buying!

What we have here are thirteen crudely animated episodes, first aired in 1989 and 1990 all spiffed up, cleaned off, and augmented with bells and whistles, bonus materials, and self-pitying audio commentaries.  If homer, marge, Bart Lisa and Maggie look weirdly off model, if their voices sound spooky and different, and if the animation seems particularly glitch-filled, just remember this: we didnt know what the hell we were doing back then.

Whats fun for me is looking back on all thse old episodes is how many jokes and characters have stayed vivid for more than a decade.  I loved Santas Little Helper leaping into homers arms at christmas; the debut of blinky, the three eyed fish; barts game winning scrabble word \'KWYJIBO\'( A fat, dumb, balding north american ape with no chim); the simpsons giving eachother electroshock therapy courtesy of Dr. Marvin Monroe: Lisa playing saxaphone with bleeding gums murphy; homer being mistaked for bigfoot; and marges bowling instructor strangely losing his french accent when yelling for onion rings.

I also dig Granpa Simpsons letter to TV advertisers: \'I am disguted with the way old people are portrayed on television.  We are not all vibrant , fun loving sen maniacs.  Many of us are bitter, resentful induviduals , who remember the good old days when entertainment was bland and inoffensive\'

So enjoy. we\'ve got more Simpsocs episodes the make, then broadcast, then re-run then chop up for syndication, then sell to you on DVD.  But you know something? We wouldnt have it any other way"

                Your pal,
                             Matt Groening

Very well said, quite humerous:)

Well i will be buying every season as soon as they release them anybody know when the second season will be on the way?

I\'ll be buying all these for sure. I just wish the first season would hurry up and come out here in New Zealand.

They are going to release the second series before christmas in the US, and then they are going to release 2 seasons each year.

But the rest of them are going to be more expensive than the first cause the first only has 13 episodes. The rest of the series have up too 28

Got it the day it came out.  BTW, on in the bonus features section, there are some hidden bonuses.  Try finding odd places your browser will allow you to click/move to.  Like bart\'s T-shirt, for instance.  ;)

Fox sets ``Simpsons\'\' for DVD boxed set
By Scott Hettrick

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - ``The Simpsons (news - Y! TV)\'\' are coming to DVD.

On Sept. 25, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment will release an elaborate boxed set of the first season of the 10-year-old animated hit that is TV\'s longest-running current comedy series.

A follow-up set of the second season may be released in time for the holidays, with two more sets being released each year thereafter, according to Peter Staddon, Fox Home Entertainment senior vice president of marketing.

With only 13 episodes in the first season, the first three-disc set will be fleshed out with loads of extra material, including the original shorts that debuted on ``The Tracey Ullman Show\'\' and a never-before-seen lost episode.

Unlike the first three seasons of ``The X-Files (news - Y! TV)\'\' that each take up seven discs and are priced at $149 (seasons four and five are in the works), ``The Simpsons Season 1\'\' will be priced at $39.98.

But the price and number of discs will go up for subsequent seasons that each had 26 or more episodes.

With sales expectations high, Fox will launch a multimillion-dollar marketing campaign for the series.

Creatively, producers are experimenting with innovative features to include in future boxed sets. Staddon said that one idea is to produce retrospective programs featuring highlights of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie or other selected characters from the show.

What viewers will not see is the actors recording the voices of the characters.

``That would burst the bubble,\'\' Staddon said. ``We don\'t want people to think of anything but Bart and Homer when they see those characters.\'\'

There will also be no interactive gaming features, so as not to take away from the popular video games featuring ``The Simpsons.\'\'

But the first boxed set will include seven foreign-language clips, showing, for instance, Homer and Bart as dubbed in Japanese.

Also included will be Albert Brooks outtakes, a BBC special called ``America\'s First Family\'\' and an ABC News Special Report on the Bart Simpson T-shirt controversy.

Other extras include original scripts, commentary for each episode, early sketches, magazine covers and stills.

Actually, it was quite unfortunate, they decided not to include all the Tracy Ulman shorts on Disk 1, there is only one set.  I\'m hoping they don\'t split em up over all the seasons, that\'ll just be annoying.

Also, the so called "foreign language" clips don\'t work correctly from the menu system, it requires a bit of tweaking to get them out.

If FOX really wanted to screw us over, they would make whatever turns out to be the final season cost 200 bucks, cause people like me would pay it to complete the set.
