GameCube to use IBM Microdrives
« on: October 29, 2001, 02:17:58 PM »
Sweet. My dad is a digital photographer and already has a 1 GB microdrive, as soon as a 2 GB one comes out, then I\'ll probably get his 1 GB drive and I can use it in the cube. a 1 GB microdrive is about 1in x 1in x 0.2in. They cost about 500 dollars per Microdrive, and if dropped ruins the whole thing. But hey, this is it. The Gamecube is just ahead of its time using SD cards and Microdrives. Its just plain ahead of its time. Innovation just keeps commin\'

yeah! a 500 dollar add-on! that is using that R&D to it\'s fullest!

Maybe they should\'ve just made a bigger memory card, 54 blocks seems pretty shorthanded to me.

Its not a hard drive arse. Its a possible expansion of the A-Ram and the price that they go for drops 50%+ every year. I doub\'t they were planning on using them at launch.

Does the Gamecube even feature expandable RAM ala N64?

I don\'t think it does.

At any rate, where did you get this information, or is it more like speculation? Because that\'s all it seems like.

Actually it\'s NOT expandable RAM from what I\'ve been reading. It seems it\'s actually just an expensive minature hard drive. The speed of the drive is said to be only 3600 RPM and the fact that it conects to a generic port on the Gamecube makes me doubt if the transfer rate would be fast enough to keep up with the GC\'s insanely fast RAM.

It could be used as V-RAM I suppose, or for other storage purposes, but it is far from being 500 megs or 1 Gig of extra RAM for the GC.

I\'m waiting for..."here\'s a proved formula...add-on = failure !"

It\'s not an add-on.  It\'s a glorified memory card being made by IBM, not Nintendo.

And it wouldn\'t have to be 1GB.  They could chop the size in half to reduce the cost, mass produce it to reduce the cost, and wait six months to reduce the cost and it\'d be affordable.

Obviously, no gamer would pay $500 for memory.

No games will be planned to use it exclusively unless it takes off, so for now it\'s just a big memory card...  As far as I can tell.
