M$ Japan Xbox commercial:
« on: January 22, 2002, 06:54:15 PM »
Got this on IGN boards.  Can\'t wait to see how well Xbox do in Japan.  :p    http://boards.ign.com/message.asp?topic=17832094&replies=16

I have to say it, I was shocked by this one.

I was watching a Japanese variety program between 8-9 PM here last night called "London Hearts", one of the most popular comedy TV shows between the 17-25 age bracket. During a CM break halfway through, an X-box commercial, the first I ever saw in Japan, came on. It was more or less an impressive CG of a green blob with molecules ramming into it to form the green gem that goes on top of the system. What was said was:

"Ge-mu de, anata no jinsei o kaete mitai to omotta.
Oogesa desu ka."

which tranlates into

"We\'d thought that we\'d try changing your life through games.
An exaggeration, perhaps?"

At the end, they show the machine itself with the text "ARE YOU READY?" Release date is shown as Feb. 22.

The showing of this CM during that particular time slot, plus the fact that Microsoft partially sponsored that particular program, is an indication that the company is really going for the mainstream. Assuming that these commercials continue for the next month, the system will actually achieve sufficient word-of-mouth -- though I would have never believed it.

It\'s probably a little too early to show gameplay just yet.  PS2 did the same thing...remember those awful PS9 commercials?  About 2 weeks before launch they started piling on the commercials with game footage...expect the same from MS.

Yeah, and lets not forget about those lame US Xbox commercial teasers.  They had like 10 different commercials with just someone talking and a green X on the screen.  Then a few days later is when they started showing the gameplay.

And then way back in the DC days, those were the worst.  You couldn\'t even tell what they were advertising...

They all got our attention, otherwise we wounldn\'t remember them right now.  Something worked...

Just when I thought those damn GC commercials were getting ANNOYING.

How retarted putting a person in a damn cube with his heading moving in 1 zillion different directions seeing all those game footage walls. You know what that spells?

CHEESE MARKETING

Also, that Wave Race commercial is by far the most boring. Ok, so maybe it was "cool" the first time I saw it, but those DYK lines at the bottom was the last thing the commercial needed. It\'s not some sort of trivia infomercial, is it?
You think positive, I\'ll think realistic.
