PlayStation 3 CELL Powered?
« on: January 31, 2002, 09:12:58 AM »
Sony\'s chief technical officer Shinichi Okamoto recently went on record with Famitsu regarding possible plans for the PlayStation 3. Specifically, Okamoto-san hinted that Sony\'s next game console may include processor technology codenamed \'CELL.\' Currently in the planning stages, the processor will be codeveloped by Sony, Toshiba, and IBM. Tentatively scheduled for completion by 2005, the processor will be capable of 1 Trillion FLOPS (floating-point operations per second). By comparison, the PlayStation 2 is capable of 6.2 Billion FLOPS. Variants of the \'CELL\' technology are expected to revolutionize content delivery and networking systems in the PC market as well

Wow, almost forgot about cell.  I remember us all arguing about CELL last summer.  Seems like Sony\'s actually going through with it.

thats very sweet, i have to admit, since the nes and snes ive owned a PSX and N64, i lost interest with those 2 even though psx was pretty good. But ever since i bought the ps2 last week my enjoyment in gaming has been renewed by it so im a playstation fan for life unless they goof like the N64 did, so this is very good news for me.
Games Ive Owned:

GT3, GTA3, Baldur\'s Gate,
Nascar Thunder 2002

the future of videogaming definintely looks promising. Of course, that will also make others up the anty in the console wars, but that too is a good thing :)

if this is what i think it is, i saw a show on discovery talking about Toshiba\'s new chip that would be running at 200ghz(not mhz), and they would be using it in everything, the one thing that stood out is that it would be used in phones, and would provide instant language translation.  since sony and toshiba are making the cell, i think this might be it.

It was pretty much a given that Sony would use the Cell in the PS3.
Heres a link to an article from early last year

And another one from late last year. I guess this process could be used for the Cell now.
