Yeah, I\'ve started to wonder about that site.  After all, it\'s said that since late 2000.  I would have thought Nissan motors would have moved quickly.  I also wonder why they claim that there were no car ads, when there really, blatantly used to be nissan and other used car adds on his computer site.  Either way, nissan computing shouldn\'t have been allowed a .com in the first place...  .com is SUPPOSED to be for national or larger commercial.  Nissan computers should be .us or .(state) ->  but [mostly] American companies took over the .coms...

And now the same is happening to the .nfo and .biz extensions.... they (internic and such) should have really done the control better.  For instance it\'s easier to get .com than to get a .ca (you have to prove national Canadian need), even .on.ca (you have to prove a province wide need).

.com is the standard postfix for all nationality websites. You don\'t need to have a company, they are free for personal use. The only ones that I\'ve encountered that are unavaiable to everyone is .org (although I\'ve seen several who obviously arn\'t non-profit making organisations) and .gov which is teh bomb. Spoofing a .gov is like asking a male to join a massive lesbian orgy. You don\'t need proof of British citizenship to get a .co.uk or a .uk either

Actually, you should go back and read your history.  They\'ve become free for personal use because of the lack of initial regulation.  However, .com came out and was supposed to be for commercial nationional or multinational webpages.  Haven\'t you noticed how most of the world uses the .(state/province) and .(country) extensions, for their business?
Example: Look at enermax computer cases (big company, head is like enermax.tw).  I hate to tell you but the idea behind .com was NOT to have some guy selling insurance to the Manhattan, New York area taking bestinsurance.com as his website.  Or Futureshop?  It\'s futureshop.ca (cause it\'s a Canadian company most business stays in Canada, now owned by bestbuy).  Bestbuy should be at bestbuy.us (because it\'s a US company with most business in the US, but rather they\'ve been at bestbuy.com all along.

It was going to be better with .biz and .nfo, but unfortunately the procedures internic put in place to assure a fair lottery by everyone (limiting MAJOR registrars to one entry per person per name, with a rating system for actual necesity of the name), fell apart when a large group of korean registrars flooded the application process, and ended up with the lion\'s share of the newest and most desirable names.  People should realize that though the US has become the biggest developer of the net, and is the largest registrar of .com names, they didn\'t start the net.  The net started worldwide, at learning institutions and research facilities.

nowadays, pretty much every major site will have a .com, whether they are a corpartaion or not. In the uk, it is customary to have a .com or .co.uk (the equivalent) rather than .uk

its not a problem, and you can hardly expect internic to be able to keep track of it today, when there are so many being registered every day. And for your information, I have seen VERY few state specific domains, with pretty much every american webapge I\'ve ever been on having a .com

I\'ve been thinking about this one, and I have to say that I don\'t have a lot of sympathy for this guy.

In my opinion, Uzi Nissan has a legitimate legal claim to the Nissan.com domain name, but there\'s no rational reason why he would should want it.  He runs a small computer business in N. Carolina, so his internet needs could be satisfied just as well by another domain like nissancomputers.com or something like that.  In fact, I\'ll bet that many of his potential computer customers would not even think of entering nissan.com into their web browser to find him, because they would assume that it would take them to the automaker.  Uzi Nissan\'s plan to use nissan.com to sell PCs in N. Carolina is utterly absurd.

He shouldn\'t have put banner ads on his site linking to other businesses in the automobile industry.  By doing so, he clearly benefitted financially from the Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. trademark.  He also should not have asked for "millions" when Nissan Motor contacted him to discuss selling the domain.  That action revealed that his goal in registering nissan.com in 1994 was to cash in at the expense of a big corporation, not to simply run a small computer company.  Nissan Motor Company WAS selling cars in the US under the Nissan name in 1994, so he knew what he was doing.

If Uzi Nissan\'s only goal was to sell computers, he should have settled this with Nissan Motor co a long time ago.  He should have asked for something reasonable, like $50,000 or $75,000 to represent the lost business while his customers couldn\'t find his web presence (a liberal estimate, I\'m sure you\'ll agree).  Then he should have asked Nissan Motor Co. to purchase an alternate domain for him, like nissancomputers.com from whoever owned it.  Then he could have asked for something else to be thrown in, like a new Nissan Maxima with a 15 year warranty, and I\'m sure Nissan Motor Co would have gone for it.

Instead he got greedy, and now he\'s complaining because a big corporation is making life hard for him.  I don\'t enjoy dealing with greedy small business owners who are always looking for a quick buck.  This is probably the kind of guy who would try to sell you a ribbon cable for $5 that cost him $.50
