Sony\'s Hirai said game software price may now be under consideration as well. "I think that as we move on the pricing for the hardware, I think we need to take an aggressive look at the software pricing too."

Wishful thingy fatty.. er fasty! (dang, I always get that wrong)
The Xbox initiative is right up there with .NET and Windows, some would even argue more so. MS isn\'t going to give up on a clear Cash Cow that easily. And if keeping it means giving the hardware away for free, they will. One little thing that should be noted is, Sony can\'t do that, not if they want to maintain something sustainable.

If they can do it.. Why aren’t they doing it now?
PS2 has been outselling the FlexBox since day one.

See Chronos thread for salesdata :fro:

Did you know that Sonys GAME division (SCE) earned more cash than Sony Pictures this year?
SCE is the biggest money maker for Sony right now.. If Xbox would catch up (in some magical way).. Dont you think Sony would spend all they could trying to save it?

Mind you.. PS2 is MAKING money for Sony.
MS is loosing money on every Xbox sold.

m$ is losing hundreds on every xbox sold, and that number is go up by $100 more in a few weeks

and why couldnt sony give them away for free?
they got 30+ million consoles out there in two years time, and everybody knows the real money is made on software

Well..there are laws against "flooding" the market with free stuff. I don\'t recall what the exact jargon is......but it\'s not allowed in the US.

sega gave DC\'s away for free, AND they had a STELLAR lineup of A+ titles (which xbox does not), and that couldnt save it from demise

Memory Card (8MB) (for PlayStation 2) $ 24 SRP

DUALSHOCK 2 Analog Controller $ 24 SRP

Awesome. I\'m going to get a second memory card and a new PS2 controller (I\'m stuck using old PSX controllers because the cord to my PS2 controller got torn up by my stupid dog) as soon as possible.

Lets see. Atari was a hugely unstable company with absolutely no source of income. Microsoft is a massive corporation with greater earnings than nearly every other company on the Earth.

If you look at past failures, those that had spectacular entrances that eventually had to leave the market most often had to leave because the companies behind them couldn\'t continue to keep pouring money into the systems without getting any money back. Sega and the Dreamcast, as well as Atari and the Jaguar, are great examples of this. Each company had to pull out of the hardware market due to their inability to survive in the hardware market.

Microsoft isn\'t like these companies, because it\'s not at risk of dying out, or even coming near that, even if it continues down this money-losing path.

They are losing a ridiculous amount of money on this. But the thing about Microsoft, the trait they have that Sega and Atari didn\'t is, they can.

I\'m not going to make any predictions. I\'m not going to say they won\'t leave the industry entirely, because that\'s always possible. But they can get away with losing quite a bit more money than other failed gaming companies could\'ve.
