Add/Remove Programs...

I used this feature to remove Norton Systemworks from my PC.  Now the time has come to reinstall it, and Windows is telling me that the previous programs are still there.  I can\'t find anyway to delete them, and during installation it won\'t let me overwrite them.  What can I do?!?!

Can\'t you just find the program folder and delete it? Like c:\\program files\\norton systemworks, or whatever. That should do the trick - I hope.

Sometime\'s when you uninstall programs like these the registry entry is still there, as Sammy said check out the base folder it should be just a few kb\'s if it is there.

Oh yeah, refering to your problem...  I agree with what they said.  Hit that delete key..

I\'ve done that, and sadly it isn\'t working.  When I try to install Norton, it does a check, and it tells me its still out there!

You\'re gonna have to go into the registry and delete anything that\'s associated with the program.  Just be careful, cuz if you don\'t know what you\'re doing, you could end up having to reinstall windows.

Ok, I did have to reinstall windows, but not for that reason.
How do i get to the registry to delete NORTON related programs?

Also since I\'ve reinstalled ME my PC constantly locks up for no apparent reason, any ideas?

ok.. first off.. I dont know much about ME other than it really sux.  It freezes a lot.. it has a lot of glitches.. I\'ve been glued to Windows NT and 2000.

to edit the registry you use a tool called regedit.  type it in the Start>Run thingy.  Once open, do a thorough search for anything associated with Norton..  I\'d start by doing a search through the registry for the words Norton, and then NAV, which i think was Norton Anti-Virus.. Be careful what you delete, cuz you can\'t redo.

if I do delete sumthin that I shouldn\'t have, I would have to reinstall ME?

Is Xp any good?

I heard that XP has its ups and downs, but its a more solid OS than ME ever was or will be.  Its developed by a completely different team of developers inside M$. I personally have never used it, but I haven\'t heard as much negative things about it as I did when I was using ME.

If you delete something you shouldn\'t have, you either have to reinstall the program that was associated with the registry entry, or the entire OS. depends on what the effect is

so if i can\'t get ME up and running, it wouldn\'t hurt to fomat my HDD and install XP?

If you don\'t need anything that\'s in your computer right now, like documents, music files, etc, then yeah, it wouldnt hurt to format your HD and install XP instead of ME.  Actually, if it was my personal computer, I\'d install XP anyways.

ok, I reinstalled ME without losing any files.  
I scowered the registry like U advised, and deleted everything Norton.  And it worked.

I\'ve reinstalled Systemworks, partially.  Its asking me 4 disc #1, I\'m going to have to ask my father if there is another disk, but I don\'t think there is.  The disk Im using now is not labeled as being disc #2.  This partial installation is not allowing me to use the Live Update feature which is critical to Norton being effective.  I think theres something fishy with it asking 4 disc #1.  What do U think?

I dunno about the thing asking for disc #1. especially since installations usually start from disc #1, an therefor wouldn\'t really have to ask for it.  There are instances however, when the installation file is looking for a file and can\'t find the specific file in the directory that it\'s looking in, and will figure that the wrong disc is in the drive.  In these cases, there\'s usually a detail button and a browse button that will allow you to change the directory to search through..  However in your case, I\'m not 100% sure.
