MS didn\'t take DVD Progressive out because of cost, not at all. The Xbox can easily spit out a 480p signal but had to do 480i because of macrovision. MV cannot exist on a progressive signal and the makers of DVD were afraid millions of Xbox owners would buy a simple hack to defeat the macrovision and copy as many DVDs as they wanted.
Looks like the owners of DVD are lightening up about macrovision and copying worries. People are loving the advantages of DVD over VHS and DVD-Rs with a recorder isn\'t cost effective. It also doesn\'t hurt that Sony is one of the owners of the DVD technology.
And progressive or not, the PS2 DVD player is still horrible. Kudos to Sony though for at least making the effort to stay competitive.
