It took Game Arts 2 games to develop theirs, Sega 1.

Well the only reason a game is a Final Fantasy is because they hold the same motif in every game.  That includes the battle system.  Otherwise it would be nothing but a pure cash in on the name..

BTW, did you play FFX?  I know the battle system isnt anything major, but it sure does make the fights a lot more fun :)

Also every Square RPG has a different battle system.. there are real time (Kingdom Hearts), Strategy (Tactics) Semi-Real Time (Vagrant Story) then all there different takes on turn based (Xenogears, Chrono Cross, Unlimited Saga etc. etc. etc.)

All of them have been heralded for their battle systems by some person or another (except perhaps KH because its a Zelda rip-off ;))

Don\'t you get tired of the same battle system after so many games? Wouldn\'t it be a welcome change to do something new?

With new hardware should come new changes and I believe it should be more than just technical.
July 2002: If you had bought $1000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00. Enron, $16.50 left. Worldcom, $5.00 left. If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser beer one year ago, drank it all and turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $214.00. Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.

Final Fantasy XI = Real time battles
Kingdom Hearts = Real time battles
Every other Square game = Completely different battle system to FF

Final Fantasy has always been what its been.  FFX changed all that and upgraded the battle system.  Now with the exit of Sakaguchi-san I wouldnt be too surprised if they changed the battle system.  But the reason Final Fantasy is my favorite series is because of those idiosyncrasies (if thats the right word to use).. because of the same motif in each game.  It strikes a cord with me.  If I want another battle system, I\'ll play another RPG.  (Not necessarily by Square either :))

Looks kinda dissapointing...it seems to have some cell-shaded influence of sort... I remember PDS (despite in low-res and all) looks more enthralling than this.

Have you played Panzer Dragoon Saga?

Yes of course, I owned the game! The graphics are more grim and realistic and it has one of the most memorable boss fight for me. There\'s one boss that sticks up the ceiling in one of the caves and no matter how hard I tried, it\'s immune to all my attacks...until I realised I have to shoot at the flowers at the caves floor and they\'ll shoot some spores upwards that hit that boss on the ceiling!!

PDS is definitely one of the most memorable RPG ever with one heck of an ingenious battle system that is not seen elsewhere!!

But in terms of quality RPGs in quantity, SQUARE is KING. And don\'t give me that crap about "not enough changes in the battle system". I\'ve played EVERY Square RPGs on the PSX(except the Saga Frontiers games and FF8....which are the only bombs ) and each game have enough battle system variant and great story to make them worthy to be in my game library.

I was not fortunate enough to play it.  But after I get myself setup with all the current consoles and computer parts and such, I plan to look into finding a Saturn and a Dreamcast (hard to find a dreamcast here!) so I can catch up on all the games I missed in my time of financial turmoil. :)
