Meh (Help)

Yeah ... I PLAN on going online in a few days, and what I planned on doing was just taking the Motorola cable modem hooked to my PC and use it to run my PS2 online.  HOWEVER, I was talking to someone today and they told me that may not work because some cable modems only work with one designated IP.  Well ... I changed my computers IP, and, alas, it didn\'t work.  So, will it work on my PS2?

If not, anyone know anything I might be able to do to MAKE it work?

Cable modems may have a problem because you do need to purchase each IP address.  Now if you unplug your computer that should work.  As long as you have one at a time.

Your PS2 should sense your IP address.

As long as you are running one thing at a time you should be fine.

Could he buy a router?  Would that work with a cable modem and allow him to have a PC and PS2 online at once?

you dont have to get another IP unless they go by MAC address also

my cable company wanted me to buy a second IP when i asked them about hooking another PC onto my connection.  i told them to piss off, and bought a router.

MM is indeed correct.  A router is the answer to your question.  I have a Netgear router with 2 PC\'s hooked up to it.  The problem for me is that my PS2 is across the house from my router.  Either I have to find a LONG ethernet cord or move the PS2 - which is not an option really.  Any suggestions?  Does anyone know how long Ethernet cables run?  Is wireless an option (I would think lag would come into play if I did that)?

the Router is the way to go....Usually over 100 feet there is some minimal loss.......we have 3 PC\'s and soon my PS2 Hooked up to it ( I have a 4-port D-link CAble/DSL Gateway) it is like 80 bucks....all I need is another 10-15 feet of CAT-5 10/100 cable. All that Roadrunner (MY ISP) knows is that ther is 1 IP here.........The router makes Internal IP\'s when they leave my house they are on the single IP that my ISP gave us! and we asked them about it and they dont care!

Si Senor.  A router or a firewall w/ip forwarding/masquerading will do ze trick.  Most likely if you\'re cable you\'re getting a DHCP IP address unless you are paying for a static ip.

Yeah ... a router would be a nice way to go.  I checked in on that ... and they\'re $50:(  Thanks for the suggestions ... but I dunno about that.  I probably will if all else fails, but I dunno.  I mean, I AM only 15, and I already bought a PS2, 4 ps2 games, now the network adaptor and Super Mario sunshine this summer.

But yeah, another option I was looking into was maybe just renting a separate cable modem until christmas and ask for a router then.

heh ... I actually missed this one.  So let me get this straight ... if  I unplug my computer, and THEN try using the cable modem, it should work?

Well unplug the connection going from your modem to your computer and run it from your modem to the ps2 and it will work.

But then you have to switch back and forth every time you want to use one or the other.

Trust me ... that would be more than fine for the time being:)

I thought that, with a cable modem, you had a static IP address all the time.  Am I wrong? also, how good of a firewall does the router act as?

For any of you who care ( I KNOW there\'s a lot of you:D), after quite a bit of trial and error ... I\'ve found that users with Comcast HSI CANNOT use a single modem on both pieces, their PC and PS2 without use of a router.  Unfortunately, I haven\'t been able to find what any of the stores deem to be "decent" routers for less than 80 some dollars.  So, I decided to just BUY another cable modem (Comcast sucks.  $20 to buy an IP address ... $5 a month there after.  I don\'t think so.).  Luckily for me ... my step dad is going to help with half the price ... so rah!  Anyway ... in summary ....
