ps2 screen too dark?

I notice my ps2 give out too dark screen.  I compare my ps2 to my standalone dvd player and connect both on the same TV.  I pop in some dvd movies on both and I realize the standalone give out better shade of gray and not too dark screen.  I usually thought it was the tv\'s fault.  Now i realize is the ps2.  Not only that, my standalone dvd player give out better color and my ps2 contrast is just too high and there seem to be red push going on.  I thought is my tv fault, but how can it be after I calibrate it.
My guess is that  maybe my standalone dvd player have 10 bits of grayscale while ps2 have only 8 bits of grayscale?  Does anybody experience this problem and is there anyway to fix it?
If you recommend me to turn up the brightness, well I did try that but true black doesn\'t look black.  It turn out grey and everything is just too bright...
If anybody is curious.  You can test your standalone dvd player and your ps2 to a tv.  My ps2 is about 1 year old so I don\'t know if newer ps2 have this kind of problem.

If you\'re still using the standard cabling given with the console then that\'s probably your error. I\'ve never seen such a poor standard lead given out with a console before, even the games they try and hype up look like an N64\'s using it.

When black doesn\'t look black and the contrast looks higher than a hippy at woodstock then it\'s time to fork out for a nice aftermarket item.

I\'m with shdknfvfdlvvsl, Paul2 buy another cable for your PS2.

Sony do a nice aftermarket lead, picture only though, you need an optical or optical to 2x phono for your sound to an amp.

I think it retailed at £35 (GBP), so, as always, to work out the US Dollar amount just swap £ for $ !!

Unfortunately it still green screens on DVD although the picture in games or Films (using an AR2) is orgasm inducing, the best test so far for a lead is FFX on the cutscenes..............wow!

Remember the PS2 is a game console and a DVD player second and it should be treated and though of that way.

Sony never made the dvd playback to rival newer models they send themselves the ps2\'s dvd quality should rival mid level dvd players.  So don\'t expect too much from the ps2\'s dvd playback.

I forgot to mention that I even bought third party cable (still the standard RCA cable though...my tv doesn\'t support s-video or component.)   i use standard video cable for my dvd player too.   the standalone dvd player give out more accurate and natural color than the ps2.  Now I have two standard av cable.  If my tv have component, I will try to buy component.

I think you guys should try to hook up your ps2 and dvd player to the same tv and pop up a dvd movie for comparison, especially one with lot of darkness and black.  I think Resident Evil is a good one.  oh, my stand alone sony dvd player is nearly two years old and that\'s older than ps2.

Oh, if you have s-video/component cable for your ps2.  I would love to know how it\'s compare to standalone dvd player.  Does it still give out too dark screen.  (Maybe ps2 give out low gamma...)

My PS2 gives about the same quality as my DVD player. Anyway, I don\'t use my PS2 to watch DVD...not worth the tear on wear on it!

I use an S-Video cabl now and have never looked back. it\'s just so much sharper and less "shimmery" than your normal composite cable.

hey, we have the same user name.  So, anyway, paul, i know the quality both ps2 and dvd player gives out same picture quality.  But does the ps2 screen is a bit too dark than stand a lone dvd players?

The only thing I found lacking in the DVD playback of my PS2 is the random glitching that goes on, and the fact that it absolutely refuses to play the Cowboy Bebop Session 1 DVD...  The next day I went out and got another DVD player.

As far as video goes, I\'ve noticed no difference between the two visually, though I run the video signal from both through my reciever and then to the TV using the Monitor loop.  I know, I know, you people are going to flip out that I do that, but honestly I\'m not a freak on video and as long as it looks better than VHS, which I am beginning to realize looks like ass, I don\'t mind.

Must have good sound though.

I found a site that talks about it.  The reason why ps2 screen is too dark because japanese TV black start at 0 IRE while American black level start at 7.5.  Sony didn\'t bother calibrating the IRE to 7.5 for American PS2.  No wonder most of the dvd movies I play seen a little too dark.

CAV 0.1 100.8 Black is at 0, which means this DVD player does not have setup. There is no way to turn setup on. White is where it belongs.
YC 0.0 98.9 The YC output closely matches the CAV output.

We gave the overall response of this player a 5.

Test Results Comments
Setup  There is no setup on the outputs, and there is no way to add it. If you calibrate your TV based on the PS2, then TV broadcasts will appear washed out because you have brightness set higher than it should be. If you have configured your TV based on another DVD player, then the blacks will be clipped and you will lose all shadow detail when you look at the PS 2.

Just check the  number of white dots under your eye and your user name....it says "2"......

Anyway, like I said, there\'s no difference in quality between my DVD player and PS2.
