Coup in Iraq???? Fingers crossed

Great story about the Saudi\'s finally pushing for a coup....

"Convinced that President Bush is serious about invading Iraq, Arab leaders hope to avoid war by orchestrating a coup in Baghdad. Well-placed sources have told TIME that Saudi Arabia is vigorously pursuing a concrete plan to encourage Iraqi generals to overthrow Saddam and his clique. Western and Arab diplomats say the Saudi proposal requires a UN Security Council resolution declaring amnesty for the vast majority of Iraqi officials if they orchestrate a transition of power in Baghdad. Such an amnesty would extend to all but 100 to 120 of the most senior Baath Party officials, including Saddam, his sons, close relatives and others who have long formed part of the ruling circle. It would be offered immediately prior to the outbreak of war as a signal to Saddam\'s generals that the time had arrived to save their own skins with a U.N.-guaranteed amnesty. And, the Saudis believe, it could well bring the traditionally coup-proof dictator tumbling down. "

It would be great to see this go down. If we can\'t get him maybe his own generals can. In the end we all know that he will fall to his knees once again and find himself in submission.

I saw that on Fox last night, we could only be so lucky.  I also saw Scott Ritter in an interview for the first time.  He looked like a total idiot.  He contradicts himself and then gets angry when a retired general suggested he ride on the lead tank if we go to war without a chemical suit on since he is so convinced that Iraq has no chemical weapons.  If he would have been in the studio as opposed to being interviewed by satellite I am sure a fight would have broken out.  Even the other (British) UN Inspector who was being interviewed thought he was full of it.

Yeah, I\'ve seen interviews with ritter in the past.  People will say anything to get on tv.  Did he write a book?  That would explain a lot.

Having them do this on their own would be wonderful.  Either way I don\'t think Saddam will live through this.

The only problem is that the Saudi royal family is no bargain either. They just play the game a little better.

Ace is right

the Saudi Rule makes Iraqi "home policy" look like a slap on the back of the hands.

That\'s assuming the saudi\'s would take control, which I doubt.

If this happens, there\'s a possibility that it could make matters worse.  The hard line militant islamic groups like the Taliban / Al Qaida / Hamas / etc already hate the Saudi royal family and the entire Saudi government.  They are seen as corrupt and immoral, and puppets of the West.  (which is mostly true)

If the Saudis orchestrate a coup in Iraq, the entire rest of the region could polarize against them.  The next coup we witness could be in Saudi Arabia.  That would be really bad.  The stable and friendly government in Saudi Arabia is our Number 1 asset in the Middle East.

Isn\'t that sad saying that Saudi Arabia is an asset to us when how many of the attackers on 9-11 were Saudi.

Not to mention there is reason to believe that they have funneled money to terrorist groups. And, when Saddam was making his move on Kuwait, they were worried they were next and they had no problem with us being there when their asses were on the line.

We need them because we need somebody in the area.
