Religious under tones in gaming today.
« on: January 22, 2003, 03:52:23 AM »
I have noticed that in almost every RPG that has ever been released there seems to be some sort of religious undertone. In most cases the religious aspect of the game is primarily the plot at witch the lead character must make a choice to follow the dynamics of the religion to simply stay alive. Obviously this is a creative way to bring a game to life but why not try to make a game without the religious under tones and bring out a game that spans the outreaches of creativity. Are there many other games out there for the PS or PS2 that lacks these religious tones? What are your thoughts on the subject?

When you refer to religious undertones, do you mean mystical? Like, mystic powers, miracles, traditions, raising from the dead using potions?

Mystic is not religious, if thats what your refering too, im not sure if you are.

Have you ever played Grandia2? Have you ever played Skies of Arcadia? Have you ever played any of the FF series? As I see it these games do not focus on just a “mystical” force rather than the religious tones. When I say religious I do not mean the same tones that wood fall within the games like Diablo. When the characters main force or drive is formed under the tones of a religion that must be understood and accepted to defeat a nemesis. This is what I speak of. Please, try to remember the games you played and the plots that were unfolded as you played them. Most have a religious tone to them. It is not so easily evident in all of them but it seems that most of them have these tones.

RPGS really aren\'t my thing, so I can\'t speak about them. Most action games I have played normally have some kind of mystical element, though I wouldn\'t/couldn\'t call that \'religious\' (as in a non fantasy/mythological god, idol etc).

i think you mean Spiritual than “mystic”

more and more poeple who once followed a religion are now living their lifes in a Spiritual nature.

in other words you beleve in something Bigger than themselfs ,but do not beleve or agree with the teachings of the Religions of this world.

this was reflected in Final Fantasy 10 when Yuna and Co turn their back on the increasing level of corruption that Yevon teaches.

other Examples

FF 7 & 9 , dealt with the consept of self..who am i where did i come from.. why am i here...etc

FF7 also dealt with the concept of Giga or the Lifestream as it was known. (planet life force)

FF8 dealt with Personal Distance and long running relationship issues (the Squall back story)

I appreciate your input man but I was not referring to “action” games. Although I can see a similar evident in the action genre, I don’t see as much of the religious tones in action games. I am just wondering if those that make these games that score a religious tone actually have a basis for there story within the game or is it solely an imaginary plot written for the sake of creativity?

Damn hippies and their dope smoking ways. Anyhow religion is an easy way to relate to an audience. Wether someone is religious or not anymore, they were likely raised religous.

I don\'t think "ruling" has anything to do with the fact that sports games don\'t have religion in them.
More like the fact that they don\'t have plots like RPGs so they never have to deal with it.

Don\'t get me wrong though, I like sports games. :)
