More X-2 details...

(Warning: If you haven\'t played Final Fantasy X there are spoilers ahead).

Two years after Yuna and Tidus\' quest to stop the omnipotent Sin, the land of Spira has entered the "Eternal Calm" hoped for in the original game. Turning their backs on the spiritual Yevon and embracing the once-hated people of Al Bhed and their Machina, the people of Spira have begun what\'s known as the "Machina Revolution" and are advancing their technology at a rapid rate. The world is at peace and the future is bright for everyone and everything --except for one girl: The Summoner Yuna. Lonely and melancholy, her heart bleeds for the Blitzball player she fears is gone forever.

As seen at the end of the Japanese-only release of Final Fantasy X International, Yuna is startled by the discovery of a curious imaging sphere that reveals the likeness of the man she misses so much. Though an unseen force has apparently captured him, Yuna becomes determined to find her lost love and enlists the help of her cousin Rikku to do it. From there the story begins to pick up steam, and Yuna\'s new tale begins.

Of course, her adventure won\'t be easy; Yuna, Rikku, and their new companion Paine (Pine) will frequently cross paths with a group of Sphere Hunters known as the LeBlanc Gang. Led by the arrogant hunter LeBlanc, and accompanied by her henchmen Uno and Sano, The sphere-hungry group quickly becomes a severe pain in the neck for Yuna and her group of unified crusaders known as the Youth League. After all, how will Yuna ever find Tidus if someone is trying to keep her from finding the spheres that could locate him? Joined by returning FFX characters Lucil, Clasko, and Elma in addition to new players Nooj and Beclem, the squad assembled in FFX-2 could be just as formidable and entertaining as it was in the last game.

For those of you expecting grand character battles, however, you should take note. Final Fantasy X-2 will only allow you to play as the three main protagonists Yuna, Rikku, and Paine. And though you\'ll be able to participate in mini-games and sequences involving a giant robot-transforming ship known as the Celsius, FFX-2\'s main gameplay focus will be on the job transformation system. Based on the job wheel from Final Fantasy Tactics selecting different outfits and powers will be key to winning your battles. Gunners, Knights, White Mages, and Dark Mages are the basic types of classes while some of the more unusual offerings include Gamblers, Mascots, Pop Stars, and the more powerful Dark Warriors, and Magic Gunners. Best of all, there are still more classes to choose from than that, but the abilities and identities of those classes are still a well-guarded secret.

Once battle begins it supposedly lends itself to a similar approach taken in Final Fantasy X, at least in terms of the basic attacks. Once you\'ve mastered the more advanced options, however, there will be plenty of strategies to exploit and use to your advantage. Foremost on the list is the ability to switch jobs mid-battle. Using spectacular transformation sequences and plenty of graphical pyrotechnics, it will be possible to switch from a Black Mage to a Gunner on the fly and change the dynamic of your battle just like that. Accompanying the job change is the ability to throw together combinations and in use specialized skills as well (which is represented by a blue sphere between the dress up orbs on the Job Wheel). These skills will allow that character to use class-specific abilities for added bonuses (for those of you who played Final Fantasy V you\'ll get the general idea), and likely replace the Limit Break system -- which probably won\'t make the cut at publish time. All in all, the system should be both familiar and not so for returning fans of the series.

Visually enhanced, more open-ended, and packed with mini-games and sub-quests, Final Fantasy X-2 could end up becoming more popular than the original. Though we have yet to play it ourselves and are disappointed to learn that the sphere grid experience-point system and Blitzball mini-game have been nixed altogether, the good should definitely outweigh the bad when it\'s released this November. Be sure and check back with IGN for more over the coming months, and check out our media page for tons of new screenshots, artwork, and the killer official music video that debuted on Japanese music television only recently. Enjoy!

Sphere grid and Blitz ball gone!  YAY!!

This whole job wheel sounds kind of interesting.  Like there might be plenty of strategic approaches for both you and the enemy.  Should vary things up a bit.

I don\'t like the idea of only having 3 characters the whole way through...or did I misread that?

Who here has played FFV and can tell us more about the Job Wheel (transformation) set up?

I like their battle system, very reminiscent of FFV and FFT.

Did I read correctly that only three characters are there the whole game?  If they have all those jobs, you should be able to have a load of characters.

I didn\'t play FFV or Tactics so I\'m not familiar with the set up or how this will work...

Could you go into more detail?

I bet that somehow, someway, Yuna will be able to use the Aeons again.

That\'s a cool pic of Bahamut, btw.

Yojimbo\'s dog can go f*ck himself, the game won\'t be the same without any kind of summons.

Mini Games
« Reply #9 on: March 08, 2003, 04:15:55 AM »
There have been four mini-games announced.

Sphere Break - Is a new gambling game invented by Rin of the FFX travel agencies. This appears to be a competition-based game allowing you to earn prizes or money.

Sphere Break plays as a one-on-one game (either single games or tournaments) where you place coins on a 4X4 board. Those coins are apparently bearing the faces of different monsters you encounter through the game, but their collection method is not yet clear (I wonder if this means you\'re going to get one ability similar to FFVIII\'s carding?). At least one of the prizes is a dressphere Gambler. The screenshots remind me strongly of the card games in FFVIII and IX.

Gun-Shooting - a mini-game tailored for Yuna\'s new primary job. You shoot against some monsters in an exterior environment Beat specific scores within specific time limits to win rare items.

Chocobo raising

Helping O\'aka escape from Al Bhed
