MAJOR slowdown.. What\'s the problem?
« on: April 11, 2003, 10:03:37 PM »
Hey guys, I don\'t know what\'s going on with my computer... I turned it on today and it is very ****ing slow for some reason. Really laggy. I\'m trying to do some homework, and it takes a million years to load up word.  When I minimize or maximize different windows, it lags... What could be the problem? Please help.

check for spyware, defrag and clean your registry, if that doesn\'t help go into services.msc and turn off some uneeded stuff.  Also turn off some crap on startup, in msconfig.

Try virus scanning also.

If all above fails.  Your processor could be getting hot, intel machines slow down, Amd wouldn\'t boot or if they are the older Tbird cpus.. They cook ;) (waits for mm) Check your cpu fan, could be dead. Check the sink on the cpu, it could be misplaced. Could even clean out the dust. Crappy airflow may not help.

Ok, well I did a virus scan since that\'s pretty much all I know how to do. Gonna defrag overnight...

What is services.msc?

And Soulgrind, I got a Pentium 3 and cpu fan is working, I can hear it. Don\'t know about the rest, I\'m a newbie with hardware.

open your case and check to see, donno how many fans u have. Make sure there\'s no dust inside your machine. Most likely it\'ll have a fair amount.
If it\'s nothing visable then it\'s probably a software issue. So fragmented hd or a virus that drains system resources are most likely causes. So do as the other guys have said, defrag and virus scan.  :)

SER, try typing msconfig in the run box thingy. Then disable any crap that loads when Windows starts, and is not needed.

If you\'re on Win XP try looking at your CPU usage - find out if any program is hogging all the CPU power. And then close the proces. I dunno. :)

Go into the task manager, see what the top process is and see how much proc % and memory it is taking. If it\'s some crap process from some crap software you installed you can simply kill it and be happy.

well, that helped.
