Paul, if you want we can open up a poll to see what the majority of PSXcentral posters think of the improvement between J&D and Jak II...

might free your mind about who\'s the "blind" one here...

Thank you echo. Paul buddy, you need some glasses my friend. There is a HUUUUGE difference. Naughty Dog has worked miracles with the ps2 and even when jak and daxter came out it looked great. While i cannot judge between J&D and R&C, I do belive that R&C came out a long while after J&D, thus leaving the developers much more time to grasp the hardware, (well it depends this is just from a visual standpoint). I did enjoy the first J&D but i will compare the two when i rent R&C.

You guys need to check reality and get contacts. Sure there is SOME improvement, but I wouldn\'t call any of those as "HUGE".

But perhaps, my standard of "HUGE" improvement is set way much higher....here\'s some of my definition:

From GT1 to GT2 (PSX)=> NO IMPROVEMENT.( Frame rates was sacrificed for higher polygon model).

VF3 to Soul Calibur (DC)=>Now, this is HUGE improvement although it\'s 2 different game but since it\'s the same genre, SC shows that VF3 was done wrong in the first place.

RR5 to GT3=> From low-res jaggie mania to Utopia. This is HUGE improvement.

From SC(DC) to SC2(PS2/XBX/GCN)=> Minor improvement.

The way i see it, the only HUGE improvement forthcoming can only be seen possibly in games like SH3 and possibly Ghost Hunter(which has amazning near pre-render quality in some scenes). But all these are still speculation until the real thing can be see.

btw, i seriously doubt there\'ll be any "HUGE" improvement from GT3 to GT4.

Anyway, I don\'t expect any kind of major improvement( graphically speaking) in the PS2 anymore. Just be glad there are more games with the same quality coming out for it.

It is subjective, but once you consider what Jak II offers more over Jak & Daxter, it is quite an improvement:
  • Textures have been improved
  • Animation has been improved
  • More effects and more characters on screen
  • Character models feature HUGE improvements
  • Draw distance seems to be at least up to par with J&D if not better
  • Freedom of doing pretty much anything at any given time
  • Physics of breaking objects

All those things that I just listed require performance. All these improvements can be seen in the video I posted - for those who weren\'t able to download it, try this link: Jak 2 Video.

Seeing how efficiant GT3 ran on PS2, I can only expect to see quite an improvement with GT4. Also, Ratchet & Clank used some form of the Jak & Daxter engine - having extensively played the game, I would say that R&C emphasizes on geometry while J&D was more balanced between geometry and textures. From what I can judge, Jak II seems to be an improvement in both ways, geometry and textures and all the other features I listed above.

Besides, I am not saying we should expect to see an improvement with every new game, but you should keep in mind that most currently available games don\'t quite hit the bar just yet and there\'s always a way to improve your code to make it more efficiant which in turn will make for better graphics [or other improvements].

Tis true. Im not sure about GT4 in terms or graphical improvements but if they can add even cleaner looks to the cars (ie better rims, and unpixelized door handles or trees, then id be more than saticefied). I also hear that visually, MGS2 mainly used one Vector Unit on ps2 VOU1 or whatever the abbreviation for it is. I mean, with time (eventhough the fist game was pushing a lot) i think even MG could be improved. J&D and R&C are just another step in ps2\'s technical and graphical evolution and i think they show great improvements.
