Datsun (now Nissan), Honda, Subaru and Toyota didn\'t have that many (if any at all) imports in the 60\'s and really didn\'t get popular until the late 70\'s during Carter\'s administration (OPEC crisis). There are still a few Subaru 360\'s running around from the 60\'s. I did have a Datsun 210 from 1979 but sold it a few years ago.

70\'s model Toyota Carolla\'s in Asia are still running around. My brother\'s \'75 Lancer is still being used by my cousins in the Pacific. Same engine but with a rebuilt tranny, of course.

My dad\'s Ford Maverick broke down in the highway with only 500 miles on the odometer.

Your point? My aunt bought a 7series bimmer 2 years ago. It broke down on her 4 days later. That can happen to any new car.

fine...late 60\'s and all through the 70\'\'s. There were alot of imports sold here during those years.

Yes it can but more than likely, in an American car. Come on, why would so many Americans have this feeling against domestic cars?

Reliability, craftsmanship, quality, longevity = Import cars > domestic cars.

I\'ll take the average import over any averge domestic any day.

luckee, I suggest wearing knee pads in your Neon. :p

And there weren\'t THAT many imports in the 70\'s compared to the 80\'s, 90\'s and today.

And where do you live GMAN? See i live in chicago, one of the most out of wack cities for weather. Trust me, Its snowing one day and 75 degrees the next. When i look around and see the ratio of old imports to old domestics, domestic cars simply out do imports. Sure imports may be more reliable in some cases, but domestics are cheap and easy to get fixed. Its easy to see these things and imports may be hot but in the long run, the caddies etc. will be the ones still here from the same decade.

On note of your link: If they made crappy cars then they must have been doing something right with the older cars cause even the crappy ones are still here.

More than likely nothing. If a problem is going to occur within one month of any new car, it\'s a crap shoot as to if it will be a domestic or import.

Reliablitly, craftsmanship, and qulaity yes...

longetivity-no..I though we just went through this.

I would as well. That choice also depends on my intentions with said vehicle.

And yes, quite a bit were out and about. If you were older, you would know. Hell, I was born in 78 and I still have noticed how many were sold vs. how many were/are on the road.

You live in Florida. A retirement state for old folks who need big American cars that are putted around like golf carts. Obviously, where you live, the rate of domestics/imports will favor domestic.  Go to California.

And I am older. And yes, we did go through the fact that imports last longer than domestics. Mercedes has a number of cars in the US with close to or over a million miles. BMW and Toyota will outlast any American car. Hell, which cars break down more often? American? How the hell do you think it\'s gonna last longer? You said it yourself! RELIABILITY!

Sheesh! You\'ve been sniffing too much nitrous.

I live in a similar city to yours. Your city is fairly close Detroit, so...DUH! There\'s gonna be more domestics! And since this is America, there will be more domestic cars! DUH! Jeez! Why are you even arguing? You have no case!

personally i love American cars/SUV\'s the only things that would take me away from American cars is an Aussie car (*points to avy and last link in sig) or a German car.

I\'ve only lived in florida for about a year and a half. And there are wayyyy more imports than domestivs down here. Try again. The only mercedes that still roll with no probl.(older ones that is) are the diesels. Got any clue how many american diesels are capable of those same numbers?

Reliability and longetivity are connected, but loosely and are different things. I\'ve already agreed that imps are usually far more reliable, but they usually dont last as long..simple fact.

I dont screw with nitrous and havent for 5 years. Havent used it *recreationally* since 92\'

Fact?

You mean to tell me, that an unreliable American car will outlast a reliable import without a rebuilt engine or transmission? Without a premature breakdown of its clutch?

The only good thing about current domestics is Corvettes and Cadillacs. :p  You just can\'t find those kinds of cars anywhere else in the world.
