I saw this movie recently and I must say I think it\'s pretty good. Easiler better than most of the movies that were released in 2003. So, has anybody seen it and what did ya think?

I haven\'t seen it but I would enjoy anything with Russel in it.

He is just such an amazing actor. Up there with Julia and Nicole.

I saw it a while back, was pretty good.  I went to the movie but was the distracted the whole night so I probably need to see it again before I really judge it.

I loved that movie. I heard it was based on book 10 of 20. So....there are more. Apparently, a lot of ship during that time were built by the US and the US had the fastest ships of that era. France and Britain would normally buy ships from the US since America seemed to have an endless supply of lumber.

Also, the books had the Captain engaging against both American and French ships. Why Americans? Well....they would "acquire" Americans as their own sailors (which culminated into the War of 1812, James Monroe had enough of the Brits pushing America around in the high seas).

It\'s quite accurate. I\'d describe the accuracy but it would spoil the movie for you. :)

Sweet, Im going to see it "soon" (I hope). :D

They bought a real ship if I remember correctly (and built a full scale replica), I saw some behind the scenes stuff on TV a few weeks ago.

Anyway, it seems very good. :)

I\'ve yet to see a movie where I thought Russel Crowe was a decent actor, doubt this would change my mind.

You didn\'t like his acting in "LA Confidential"? I thought he was good in that movie, but the movie didn\'t get much hype.

I don\'t think R.C. is a bad actor. But on a similar note - it was rather strange to see a hobbit from LOTR star as a sailor. :p

I was intrigued by this story, so I started reading the books about two months before the movie was released.  I\'m moving ahead slowly, and I\'m now on book 4, "The Mauritius Command."  What can I say, the novels are amazing.  Patrick O\'Brian really builds some fascinating characters, and the action sequences are brilliant.

I was very concerned that the movie would strip out what was really great about the books, and make it a purely action film, but that didn\'t happen at all.  Russell Crowe comes about as close as anyone I could imagine to realizing that character; though he could have used more talking scenes to display the humorous, emotionally thick-headed side of the character.  My only complaint was that his accent was not quite purely english enough.  I guess I\'m just used to hearing that Australian accent coming out of his mouth.

The guy who played Dr. Maturin was 100% DEAD ON.  That performance was fantastic.  I also liked how they effectively realized many smaller characters with an economy of dialog, like Killick, Pullings, and Babbington.  Too bad there were no land scenes with Aubrey\'s wife Sophia, her mother Mrs. Williams, or the frustrating Diana Villiers.

One more thing:  The movie shouldn\'t have been titled "Master & Commander."  That was the title of the first book, which described Capt Aubrey\'s first command on board the two masted brig HMS Sophie.  The rank "master & commander" is only for captains on the bottom rung of the ladder.  By the time Aubrey took command of the HMS Surprise, (as in the movie,) he already acheived the rank of Post Captain, which would be required for a frigate of that size.

Some of Russels best work was in LA Con. and The Insider.

Gladiator and POL were alittle crap.
