Restart on errors... ? Power Failure ?
« on: January 03, 2004, 01:27:27 AM »
Here is the deal, whenever I decide to play Warcraft 3, after I am playing a while, it just restarts. It does this when my nephew plays his games, and while I play other games. Ive looked all over the internet, but its so vague.

Is it my power? A virus? A setting? What?

The Games;
Counter-Strike
DOD
Warcraft 3
Starcraft
Some hot wheels game
Robot Arena 2
Shadowbane

Thanks in advance.

I am running 2k Professional.

Maybe its my graphic card? Even though those games are very low end visual wise, maybe overheating- or something to the degree of that.

Videocard; Geforce 2 Mx400 (I think)

//Also, I would appreciate a little more than something Im suppose to do. I mean I first used an USB cable a week ago. In other words; I dont know a whole lot.

i have a problem with my computer where the harddrive play AVI in a jerky frame rates.  It used to play fast but now, it gets jerky.  Before I remove the harddrive, it play fine, now  I noticed the busy red light doesn\'t flashes anymore.  I check the motherboard and the pins are properly connected.  So, after I remove my hard-drive and made a temporary switch, the computer started to act a little weird, by that i mean slow.  I have like 3 fans on my computer, one on top, one on side, and one on front next to the hard-drive.

When GFX cards overheat they don\'t normally make your pc reset. You\'d see strange effects (artifacts) if anything.

What it could be is a IRQ conflict or even a problem in the paging file. If your swap file isn\'t big enough you comp could reset from memory problems.  I haven\'t used Win2k for ages, but i\'m guessing its similar to xp in most setups. Just go to your Control Panel / System / Advanced / settings under Startup and Recovery. Then uncheck Automatically Restart. Next time your comp resets, you should get a blue screen if its a IRQ or Mem type problem. Write down what it says. Just the error etc..
Then post it. If you don\'t get a blue screen and it still resets. Go to your bios and check the cpu temp, if its getting to high your machine may be resetting to protect the cpu.

Ok I had the same problem with one game and I think Soul is onto something.  This problem is popping up in almost every PC related forum I go to.

It is not a virus, it is not power supply issue and from what I have read I am pretty sure its not an overheating issue.  I think it has to do with the swap file as Soul pointed out - it makes sense since the computer is trying to free up memory.

I haven\'t gotten the error since I haven\'t played that game anymore, but I would like to find out what caused it.

EDIT - read on another forum that a certain NAV file was causing the problem and once the guy uninstalled NAV the problem went away.  Anyone else running NAV who has this problem?

^ what he said, it should say it on the boot log when the machine starts.. something like "press del to enter bios mode" or some shit like that. Press it during the memory test if your not sure.
