yep,

192 kilobits per second is a bitrate of lossy audio compression like mp3 or wma.

PS2_PS2,

I think you are mistaken the bitrate of the audio compression and your dial up speed.

the 192 kbits per second is the the bitrate of the lossy compression audio that you "playback".  It was compressed down from 1.4 Mbits per second to 192 Kbits per second.  That\'s the sound quality of the audio.  Not the speed of your dial up modem.

the 56k modem can only transfer up to about that much or 7 Kbytes per second as its max in most cases.

Your modem say it download at 3.97 Kbytes, that equals 31.76 Kbits per second.

So,

if the sound quality of this audio is 192 Kbits per second and say it up to 3 minutes long.

So do this:

192 kbits x 60 seconds x 3 minutes =
34,560 kbits or about 34.56 Mbits

divided by 8.  You get about 4.32 Mbytes total of 3 minutes.

So, how long does it take to download a 192kbits per sec song of 3 minutes in 56k modem?

Assumming your 56k modem runs at it max which is 56k of course.

the 56k is short for 56kbits per second.

or 7 Kbytes per second.

so took the total of 4.32 Mbytes and divided that with 7 Kbytes.

or 4,320 kbytes divided 7 kbytes =
about 617 seconds.

How many seconds are in 1 minute?  60...so,

617 divided 60 = almost 10 minutes and 20 seconds long...

so it took 10 minutes 20 seconds to finish download this 3 minutes song running at 192 kbits per second.

That\'s assuming if your 56k is running at 56k or 7 Kbytes....

but most don\'t run that max, so it will take like 15 - 25 minutes depending on the speed...

ahh, that makes sense now. So when i listen to streaming radio a rate of 8kbps means that the quality is crap but it doesnt take up much bandwidth - i understand now

thanks paul :)

here is another short way to find the time it take to download mp3/wma...

since i like doing things in bytes, i will convert bits to bytes.  But either works out the same.

8 bits = 1 byte, so

56 kbits = 7 kbytes

192 kbits = 24 kbytes

let assume your dial up can download at 7 kbytes constantly without hiccups and you are download a 192 kbps mp3.

So 24 kbytes divided by 7 = about 3.42 times.

So use this "3.42 times" to multiply it with the length of the music.

Say if a music have a 5 minutes in length.

5 minutes x 3.42 times = 17.1 minutes

or 5 x 3.42 = 17.1 minutes

So, it will take you 17.1 minutes to finish download a 5 minutes song.

(Added: also, use this 3.42 to multiply the 3 minutes and its equal = 10.26 minutes, pretty close to 10 min 20 second from the above post).

But of course, again dial up don\'t run up to 7 kbytes in most cases and aren\'t consistance.

I will average mine that it runs at 5.5 Kbytes per second.

Again use th 24 kbytes from the 192 kbits mp3.

24 divided 5.5 = around 4.36 times

I will use this 4.36 times to the lenght of the music.

Let use a 5 minutes song.  4.36 x 5 =

21.8 minutes to finish download it...

to add to the confusion.
1 bit is different from 1 kbit.     1 kbit = 1024 bits
as is
1 byte diff from 1 kbyte.     1 kbyte = 1024 bytes

Then theres metric.........
