How to connect two pcs with a router
« on: October 15, 2004, 05:42:07 AM »
Hi men, first of all sorry for being away from the forums so much time.. but the university is taking all my time :(

I have a little problem and I\'d like you to help me if you know the solution, that may be not too hard for those pc masters around here.

I had a modem to connect inet till 1 months or so that i bought a router and since then I\'m connected with a zyxel. The problem is that the router uses the LAN to transmit the data to the pc and now, i cannot use my old crossed wire to connect my laptop and desktop.

I\'m gonna buy a normal lan wire... but how the hell can I connect both of them? May I connect my laptop to one of the free connections in the router? And then what? How do I access to the data in it? I\'m quite lost in this field because never used these options.

Thanx a lot for your help.

Mike.

Hi Adan :D

First of all a router/switch acts as central networking "hub" for all the computers to connect to.  All you need to do is connect both PCs to the router and go to Control Panel > Network Connections > Setup a Small Network in upper left corner (Windows XP).

From there you just answer the questions and you\'ll need to label:

1) A universal workgroup name (can be anything)
2) And also label the individual compter\'s name (Adan 1, Adan 2).

Go on the other PC and do the same; make the Workgroup name the same, but the computer\'s name is different.

Then all the computers in the same workgroup should be able to see each other in Start > My Network Places > View Workgroup Computers.

It can be a b*tch to setup but once you get it working you\'re golden. :eyemouth:

Well I managed without many problems to connect and transfer data from one computer to another following THX\'s steps. The problem I found is that my DSL setup automatically was gone and I lost my inet conection. I nad to reconfigure everything again, so I think next time i\'ll use my crossed wire :S
