There\'s a bios called Cobra for the recently announced Viper GC mod, this will boot games w/o PSO/BBA. Straight off DVD-R. Click here for the article. And here for the bios .nfo file. Excerpt from the .nfo:

What?  So you mean all this time the GC had the most secure console... or is it that more people play PS2 and Xbox so there is more demand for hax0rz?

GC both had the most secure console and had the least interest from pirates. PS2 had the most games while Xbox was from the big evil MS, and both were more profitable to crack for chip makers, so pirates and hackers were more motivated with the other two.

And yea, PSO = Phantasy Star Online, BBA = Broadband Adaptor.

You can boot directly from DVD-R... but doesn\'t the GC use mini DVD\'s? Is there room for a normal sized DVD?

No, and I\'d doubt that it\'s possible to remove the casing and play big DVD\'s like that.

If this were to be done, you\'d probably need mini-discs of some sort.

You can use full sized dvds, and yea, you can remove the lid.

or you can use MiniDVD-R which is exactly the same size and same storage of gamecube disc based on the quote on the first posted said you can.  So no need to remove the lid.  Just uses MiniDVD-/+Rs blank discs...

DVD is 12 cm with 4.38 Gbytes storage for single layer.

miniDVD is 8 cm with 1.5 Gbytes storage for singel layer which is the same as Gamecube.
