Kennedy Urges Democrats to Promote Unifying Values

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Sen. Edward Kennedy, the leading liberal voice in Congress, said on Wednesday that Democrats "must do a better job" of promoting what he called their basic, unifying values if they are to rebound from their defeat in the November elections.

"Unlike the Republican Party, we believe our values unite us as Americans, instead of dividing us," the Massachusetts Democrat said in a speech prepared for delivery at the National Press Club.

"Today, I propose a progressive vision for America, a vision that Democrats must fight for in the months and years ahead — a vision rooted in our basic values of opportunity, fairness, tolerance and respect for each other."

Kennedy played a big role in the 2004 White House race that saw President Bush re-elected and Republicans increase their majorities in both the Senate and House of Representatives.

Kennedy helped John Kerry, Massachusetts\' junior senator, rally to capture the Democratic presidential nomination, and a number of Kennedy aides joined Kerry\'s campaign.

With Democrats still seeking to regroup after 2004 election defeats, Kennedy urged them to speak out.

"If the White House\'s idea of bipartisanship is that we have to buy whatever partisan ideas they send us, we\'re not interested," he said.

\'A THOUSAND CAUSES\'

"We have an administration that falsely hypes almost every issue as a crisis," Kennedy said. "They did it on Iraq, and they are doing it now on Social Security," he said.

"They exploit the politics of fear and division, while ours is a politics of hope and unity."

In winning a second term, Bush captured 51 percent of the popular vote, and left Democrats wondering what they could have done differently, particularly on such divisive issues as gay marriage and abortion rights.

"In an election so close, defeat has a thousand causes — and it is too easy to blame it on particular issues or tactics," Kennedy said.

But Kennedy said, "There\'s no doubt we must do a better job of looking within ourselves and speaking out for the principles we believe in, and for the values that are the foundation of our actions."

"In the words of Martin Luther King \'we must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite hope."

Seems to me this dinosaur is a big part of the problem for the left. When will they learn?

I also like that they claim they are tolerant... but they left out the fine print:

What gets me is this kind of talk makes me feel he thinks America is lost now that the republicans are in power.  Both parties want a stronger, better, and happier America.  It\'s not the end of the world as he\'s making it out to be.

The difference is the Republicans are leading us away from those goals, and progressives would lead us toward them.

I beg to differ.  Trying to put "new" and "improved" on the same old idiotic progressive (code word for socialist) ideas doesn\'t change them.  Higher payroll taxes and appeasement is what he is preaching.

I love how the DNC wheels out its oldest kook to deliver its message... with this sort of babble more people will flock to the GOP.

As for being good for the right... well, I agree, it\'s good because liberals are proving how out of touch and clueless they continue to be. But that\'s about it.

Well, yeah. Teddy Boy is the exact wrong thing for the left but they don\'t get it. They keep trotting out this bloated windbag that can\'t drive a car over a small bridge without killing someone and the left scratches their collective heads why they keep losing.

Kennedy also mangled the name of the Democrats\' new star, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, calling him "Osama bin … Osama … Obama."

The audio of this is very funny. Even the reporters were laughing at him.

Very true.

I mean Republicans sure know about alot about making sure that everybody is forc...I mean...willing to tolerate their stone ag...I mean conservative thinking. They are doing what Jesus wants them to do.


Just ask Tom DeLay. He is the pinnacle of proper, moral and trustworthy behavior.
