Speaking of soundcards...

Some odd news, but indeed dodgey on creatives part.
Creative gets sued over Audigy line NOT being able to handle 24-bit audio at 96Khz in most cases.

linky

If you bought your card before the end of 2004, you can get 25 percent of their next creative purchase before september this year.

whoa....and this makes me envy my life where i get stepped all over and i didn\'t do anything about it...news like this make me upset because this was sued mostly for greed even though Creative was marketing their products, yes its misleading...but look, many other companies does the same thing too to their products...i can name like at least a few products from different companies that have misleading marketing...

this news make me upset about myself because i was being tricked by some people in real life but i didn\'t do anything about it.  I was being injured by some people.  But I didn\'t do anything about it...yet

While this news, the lawyer probably doesn\'t even know those people working there nor do they do anything to harm them...yet, the lawyers sued them mainly for the money.......I am pissed at myself because i am weak, and didn\'t have the strength to get justice for myself.  Seeing someone else who is healthy and strong on the inside does something like this like those laywers and those people that sued Creative and gotten some money out of it makes me so jealous...

Life sure is unfair and sucks...the weak get picked on, the strong survive and get away and who know if  they still continued to picked on the weak...but i think some still do.

not to be an @$$ but this news is old.  Sound card manufacturers seem to be going on a trend.  In the HTPC market the M-Audio Revolution 7.1 was THE card to buy because we were promised DVD-A support through a driver release later down the road.  Here we are 2 years later and nothing.

I\'m glad they\'re getting sued for faulty advertising but honestly if I wanted to record music @ 192/24 I wouldn\'t choose Creative, there\'s always options for quality sound cards such as RME or Lynx.

I am not going against sueing them, I am just pissed at myself that i see other people have the confident and self esteem to stand up for something that they think it wrong, or in this case, is just for greed, but compare to me, i don\'t have the confident or self esteem to stand up for myself when i get attack and the such.  So, i am mostly disappointed in myself...anyway, back to the story.

well, my creative lab Audigy platinum 2 can record 24 bits, and can playback 24 bits audio.  My guess why it\'s misleading has to do with the 24 bits quality.   Sure it can playback 24 bits or record, but doesn\'t mean it will take advantage of 24 bits signal to noises ratio which is maximum of -144 dB.

Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 rated it as -106 dB....

1 bit = 6 dB....

and -106 is roughly 18 bits of quality there.

So, if record in 20 bits quality, it won\'t make much of a difference than 24 bits...

I think the reason why Creative get sued has to do with the advertisement is too big on the 24 bits....

Majority of hometheater receivers also support 24 bits quality too...but it can only decode up to about 17 to18 bits, similiar to Soundlbaster Audigy.  Some high end receivers can only decode up to 120 dB which is 20 bits...and beyond that is very dificult, I am not sure if there is a reciever or a recorder than can record beyond -120 dB Signal to noise ratio...

-120 dB is very, very quiet.  Who can make a device super quieter than -120 dB is amazing...i don\'t know if its possible, but it will be difficult and expensive...

many built in onboard soundcard that comes with the motherboard have a crappy signal to noise ratio of about 5 to 6 bits.  Some have up to about 8 bits of quality.

Yep, it can playback and decode 16 bits quality from CD audio,  but it doesn\'t mean you will get 16 bits quality sound.  it will decode it to the max of the soundcard of about 6 bits...but i don\'t see people sueing them...even some external PCI soundcard that is inexpensive doesn\'t decode up to 16 bits quality...some only encode and decode up to about 12 bits, depending on the cost of that soundcard.  But yet, they listed it 16 bits...which is kinda misleading, it should be more open and list it as "support 16 bits playback and record..." which is different than "processing" to 16 bits quality...

I check my Soundblaster box\'s again and it said 24 Bits sampling Advanced HD...but right underneath it, it said 192 kHz, 106 dB SNR....

so, it maybe misleading, but Creative wasn\'t that misleading when they also listed the 106 dB SNR right underneath it.  Anybody who knows about sound quality from electronics know that 106 dB is 17 to 18 bits...

if Creative really wants to be misleading, they could omit the 106 dB SNR.  but they didn\'t.

While I believe some crappy and cheap soundcard post it as 16 bits, 48 kHz sampling...but they didn\'t include the SNR (signal to noise ratio)...some didn\'t even include it in the user manual specification either...the biggest reason why is that is marketing and they don\'t want consumers to know it not up par with 16 bits quality.  Say if it does 8 bits quality, that is only -48 dB while 16 bits have a SNR of -96 dB...

but i don\'t see they got sued for writing 16 bits on the box...

also on the advanced HD marketing on my soundcard\'s box, i also agree that\'s misleading...but this remind me of my cheap $80 buck pansonic progressive scan dvd player.  Right in front of the load tray, it said, "ADVANCED PROGRESSIVE SCAN".  There\'s probably nothing advanced in the progressive scan, because the de-interlacer quality also sucks compare to their predecessor 2 years ago that is more expensive, but have a superior deinterlacer than this one...

the deinterlacing isn\'t good, but I don\'t see consumers or lawyers sueing them for Printing the word "ADVANCED PROGRESSIVE" on the player.

My point is, is kinda unfair Creative get sued for this when other soundcard makers in the industry gets away with it.  I think if Creative gets sued, then other soundcard maker should gets sued too...believe me, the majority of them, doesn\'t "process" the sound quality up to par of the spec of either 24 bits or 16 bits for lower end cards...
