Ever broken stuff before while you install/or upgrade?
« on: August 31, 2005, 01:41:34 AM »
Do you guys ever broke computer parts before while you guys try install a part into the the computer?  If so, lists the stuffs that you broke...

Here is mine:

-I broke my computer tower back in 2003 I believe.  The PCI Slots on the back of the case, I thought it didn\'t fit with my new AMD motherboard, so I use a clamp or whatever that\'s called and twisted all the back of it and remove all the bridges off the case....but its cool...I went to CompUSA to bought a new case.  But later, the coolest thing is when my uncle told me about swap meet where I bought a computer case with 8 places to place the PC fans and it also have a temperature meter.  Since my mom didn\'t know where she left the receipt, we didn\'t return the case that we bought from Comp USA, but 6 months later, I hooked it up using that case for my brother\'s room.

-In December 2003, I remove my 80 GB HDD and try to install it to my brother\'s computer.  I think I did a clumpsy job that I broke a pin off the IDE connector.  The computer still runs when i install it to my brother\'s computer, but at a rather unstable and schizophrenic rate.  I transfer my 80 GB HDD to my brother\'s computer so I can install the new 180 GB into my computer.  I think I leave my brother\'s computer like that for a year until Dec 2004, where I can buy a 120 GB HDD Maxtor for $60 with 133 MB speed and 8 MB buffer.  I replace it and reinstall Windows XP...its cool.

-At that same time in December 2003, I fried a CPU.  I bought my brother a cheap Intel Celeron with CPU combo for like $50, but the guy that tried to sell us the heatsink cost a bit too much for me, so I decided not to buy it...its like $25 or $30.  So, the next day, my brother went to bestbuy to buy a heatsinjk on his own, i install it to the CPU, but I think because there is no thermal grease or maybe the grease looks like cement or something, the CPU went dead.  My uncle and my cousin thought it was maybe the graphic card that causes the computer not to boot up all the way which i disagree, later the store told the CPU is fried and they won\'t return the cash.  We then try to buy the new AMD athlon xp, but it was sold out, so we later bought Intel Pentium 4 2.66 Ghz with CPU combo and this time, my cousin install it for us, CPU and all.  Can\'t remember but something went wrong, so I have to exchange the motherboard and CPU and i installed it like how my cousin did it.

So, what about you guys, any story you like to share about your hookup experience where you broken something?  My uncle is right about this though, when you broken something, you learned from it and improve and prevent from happening again...this is quite true about computer...:)

guess i\'ve been lucky, but i\'ve never broken any computer parts.  I\'ve of course had parts go bad on me (HD, CD/RW).  I was afraid I broke my A64 since the clamp holding down the heatsink was soooo freaking hard to clamp down.  And putting an NV5 on my 6800GT was quite a nervewracking experience to say the least.  Nothing better than voiding the warranty on a $420 video card :)

When I was installing this gig of RAM a month or so ago, I felt like I was disabling a nuclear bomb or something. :) The computer is built like ass, the RAM seems fragile, and you have to jam the damn things into the slots to get them to "click" into place (then there\'s the static charge nonsense on top of that). Stupid DELL. It worked and my comp seems twice as fast now, but DELL can suck my left nut.

i\'ve never "broken" anything. I\'ve had shit fail on me like Hd\'s, Lan ports etc. But all hardware faults.
