Opinion: Capture Cards
« on: December 22, 2005, 06:14:16 AM »
I\'m looking for a good, inexpensive capture card for transferring VHS to DVD.

There\'ve been threads on this in the distant past.. but I figured I\'d poll you guys again..

DVR? You mean like TiVo?

I don\'t have one. I just have a few VHS decks and some tapes I want digitized.

Take any mini DV camera and go into the firewire port of your computer.

Plug the VHS into it.

Done.

it\'s an ATi TV Wonder or something along those lines.  I don\'t think they make it anymore, but I don\'t think they make my model anymore.  Although for some wierd reason I get a really crummy images with my coax input, but if I use the tuner on my VCR it\'s crystal clear (composite input).

I also have a Nvidia graphics card and they don\'t conflict at all, if that was a concern of yours or not.  Nvidia also makes capture cards I believe.

I\'m a lot of help I know ;)

This will capture duirectly to mpeg-2 (the codec DVD\'s use) and is based on one of the best hardware mpeg-2 chipsets around.

This card is less than half the price and has a great chipset for analog video but it\'s mpeg-2 capturing won\'t be as good.  You can capture in another format and convert mpeg-2 later in software but that requires time, HD space, and a decent CPU.

I recommend the first.
