PS3 running on emulation.
« on: May 10, 2006, 05:21:35 PM »
Apparently the PS3 games at E3 are running off emulation.

Post yesterday\'s PS3 presser, Sony gave members of the mass media and assorted hanger-ons an opportunity to test drive Gran Turismo HD. Overheard:

SONY SUIT #1: (in Japanese) The sound\'s too soft.
SONY SUIT #2: (in Japanese) It\'s terrible. We should turn it up. (to Security) Turn up the sound.
SECURITY: It\'s a monitor. We can\'t.
SONY SUIT #1: (in Japanese) What? Tell him to turn it up.
SONY SUIT #2: (in English) Turn up the sound.
SECURITY: We can\'t.
KOTAKU: (in Japanese) He says he can\'t.
SONY SUIT #2: (Takes the remote and turns up the sound) It\'s not getting louder.
SECURITY: It\'s running on an emulator.
KOTAKU: (in Japanese) He says it is running on an emulator. Is it running on an emulator?
SONY SUIT #1: (in Japanese) No, it isn\'t.
KOTAKU: Is it running on an emulator?
SECURITY: Yeah, it\'s running on an emulator.
KOTAKU: (in Japanese) He says it\'s an emulator.
SONY SUIT #1; (wipes his face/visibly annoyed)

Mere moments after the conclusion of Sony\'s pre-E3 conference, we managed to knacker a PS3 with our very own hands - and we weren\'t even trying.

As the speeches and announcements drew to a close, attendees were given the opportunity to play PS3 for the very first time. Only a handful of pods were set up around the Los Angeles auditorium - but we made sure that we elbowed our way to the front of the queues.

Our efforts were initially rewarded with being able to play Sonic the Hedgehog on the next-gen machine. Or so we thought. To begin with, and once we got over the initial thrill of the simple realisation that we were playing PS3 for the first time ever, we were engaged by the game\'s classic Sonic styling.

In the demo, players are given the option of taking control of either Sonic or Silver the Hedgehog. Either way, it makes little difference: this game is ridiculously fast. And slightly twitchy and overly-responsive with it. Either that, or we were just so excited to be playing PlayStation 3 that we somehow forgot the skills necessary for controlling a blue hedgehog.

The environments and backdrops are huge - although it doesn\'t actually look that \'next-gen\', more current-gen-and-a-half. As we were in the process of considering this, the game crashed and the screen went blank. We were loath to give up our pad to the civilians in the queue behind us, but there appeared to be little point in standing there looking at a blank screen.

Either way, it seemed as if we\'d inadvertently killed a PlayStation 3. Fortunately, tech support was on hand in the form of a man opening up the outsize drawer in which the PS3 was hidden and hitting the reset button. In the process, the truth of what we were actually playing on was revealed: a huge betamax video recorder-looking dev kit, and not a sexy \'clear black\' PS3 at all.

As long as there is hardware in stores November 17 I\'m fine

Somebody needs to remind this guy of 2 basic things about next-gen consoles:

1.  Developers will still make games that suck
2.  Developers will still manage to make crappy looking games

No big deal really, but when MS done this back when the Xbox debuted, people bashed them beyond belief. -shrugs-

If you have nothing to add to the discussion, then why bother? We\'re trying to discuss something and your useless spam (As usual) is just downright annoying.

Last E3 was a different situation ; it was the official public debut of the form of the hardware casing & specs.

This E3 is all about the software, the games. A non issue wether it\'s running on underpowered dev units or final hardware guts !

Come to thing of it last E3 360 was also running on Apple computers emulation or am I wrong?

But then again for some reason I feel like Sony is a bit rushing to get everything done on time. In one year from no hardware, no dev kits, no games, no finalized features, we have everything. And too much of them too. The HD, and the controller were unexpected, BR is a new untested disk format, we dont know what happens with the online service, Cell is a totally new acrhitecture etc.
On the other hand I am optimistic things will go smoothly. Didnt expect to see games looking so good in such a small period of time

As we can see until now, the PS3 side of things are not going all that smoothly.

However, there are alot of factors which indicate that PS3 will be succesfull eventually, some time after launch.

Yes, Microsoft has done the same thing last e3. Although they did brought it out for the press to see and gave out the actual specs for the emulation hardware, revealing that it is much weaker than the final product. Sony has not done this and actually tried to keep it hidden. For all we know it\'s a very high end computer under there that may be more powerful than the actual product.

Lol.

No, i\'m sure they\'re having some hickups now because they need harness that powerfull hardware into the final box. Once that\'s done, it\'s smooth sailing.

One thing you don\'t understand. PC > Console in terms of power.

It\'s always been like this.
